New car and new car seat (preferably RF) - which to buy first?

Hi, DH and I are considering to finally get our own car. We live in London and have always gotten away without one. At the same time DS is growing out of his baby carseat and after some research we are probably going to buy a rearfacing seat.
For those with RF seats out there - does it make sense to get the car first and then find a RF seat that fits? Or should we have a look at all available RF seats and see which car they fit in best? We are thinking about buying a used Golf or something similar, so quite keen to have a fairly compact car.

Thanks!

Another vote for the 2-Way Elite; we went and got advice from the centre in Milton Keynes and it's the one that takes up the least space. All RF seats take up a fair bit though, and because DH and I are so huge, we find that even in our Audi estate, the person in the passenger seat (ie in front of DS in his 2-Way) is a bit cramped; however, we do have the car seat quite reclined so DS can sleep, and if it was more upright it wouldn't be such a squeeze.

their is a very small car on my street with a rf issofix be-safe seat in it both front seats look about the same distance back. I have never seen the dad though. I don't have a rf seat but I think finding out what things to look out for storage boxes seam to be a problem although I did see my car on a list from one manufacturer that said their seat fitted. I have seen a list that gives the room these seat take up which you would find useful. Im sure someone will be along in a bit

Thanks for the advice. Movingsoon, I think I found the list on another thread, so this will be useful.
I am such a terrible decision maker with these big purchases.. just found out about the Kiddy Comfort Pro FF seat which seems to be very good too.. So confusing!

I'm with you loopymumsy - if I had the choice, I'd go RF every time :)

I would probably check out that the car had isofix, as that increases your choices and makes the RF seats like the besafe isofix and the KISS absolute sinch's to fit :) Then, me being me, I'd also check out the euroncap ratings for the car itself- but then I'm a bit obsessive like that!!

I've got a friend with a golf who uses a Britax TWE and seems to have loads of room as well....happy hunting :)

We had to buy a new car recently and as DS is almost grown out of his maxi cosi infant seat needed a new group 1 seat too. We bought the car first. Renault's are 5* rated for safety, so we went for one of those. A megane estate with a besafe izi wotsit isofix seat. The TWE would have fit but we move the seat around too much to be bothered re-fitting the car seat every time we change drivers!
