Shocked by nurse's attitude to carseats

Took DS(9) to hospital for routine thing. He was weighed and measured as usual. Height is 131cm. Nurse remarked "only another 4cm to grow, then you wont have to sit in that awful carseat anymore"! I muttered under my breath that "oh yes he will" but she repeated the "only another 4cm" thing. DS said nothing...

He is in a MaxiCosi Rodi high-back, which is good til 100lbs and 150cms so my kids will be in their seats til the end of primary school Grin (they love their seats btw). Thought her attitude was pretty bad - why give a child more ammunition if they are already fighting with parents about having to use a seat? We should be positively encouraging use for as long as possible (assuming height/weight is safe of course)

Did you challenge her on this? She probably thought she was just building up a bit of rapport with your DS. And although what she said is unacceptable IMHO, she has probably never really thought about it like that. If you said something to her it would probably make her think twice next time. She may have no children and hence not understand the difficulties this can cause or maybe had children who hated the car seats and was happy to get them out of them asap?

Must we all be offended by everyone and everything these days? I'm sure she sees children day in day out who can not wait to get shot of thier car seats and parents who will be quite glad to lose the inconvenience. She was just being chatty. If you want to keep your kids in seats until the end of primary school then good on you, but as you well know it's not the popular way of doing it. You can't expect to go through life holding ideas that the majority do not and then not expecting anyone to express any sentiment which might contradict your ideas. I am in a minority group because of my appearance, my religion, my hobbies and my lifestyle- if I took your approach I would never stop falling out with people.

But she could of pointed out that although legally he doesn't have to sit in it as seat belts in car are designed for Adults of 150cm and above the safest place for him to be is in a hhb. Mine sit in them so do all the children that come in the car.

I wasnt offended!! I was 'shocked' that a HCP would have such a publicly negative attitude to something that could potentially be saving childrens' lives. And I didnt start a row with her as I didnt feel it to be an approriate environment. She was perfectly pleasant, just evidently a little misguided Smile
