Hi, I've recently been give an Jane car seat and its it great condition, no accidents, and i'm happy to use it. However I just wanted some advise on whether anyone know if its still with safety guidelines due to its age. Confused

Thanks, Hema

its reccommended not to use a carseat more than 5 or 6 yrs old,as carseats have a 'use by' date and are not as effective in an accident after this.
which jane seat is it?

Never heard of seats having a 'use by' date.

What you may mean is that the seat won't meet ECE R44.04 which was introduced at the end of June 2005, and all new child car seats had to meet this standard from the end of June 2006.

ROSPA say "Child restraints that conform to a British Standard or to an earlier version of R44, may continue to be used, although as these will now be several years old, parents should consider replacing them with a seat that conforms to R44.03 or R44.04" (Source)

car seat manuacturers state there is a "use by" date.

to do with plastic fatigue (it can become brittle and lose protectiv integrity due to extremes of heat/cold it can be exposed to)

manufacturers shoudl have details on their website as to what they recommend as a length of time ot use their seats. I believe Britax state 10 years. don't know about others

I've just never seen this 'use by' before.

Has now meant that I've been looking at carseats for the last 1/2 an hour or so. It's time I upgraded mine, they are getting a bit old.

silverfrog · 07/02/2011 21:57

I've not looked at mine, but then I know they are (the ones in use) less than 3 years old currently...

I do have an infant seat which is possibly getting a little on the old side - if I were to have another baby, I would htink hard about whether I would want a newer one (infant seat is probably coming up to 6 years old now)

See "this babyproducts.about.com/b/2006/07/12/reader-question-do-car-seats-expire.htm" for information about why they have an expiry date.

And "here www.childrestraints.co.nz/manufacture-expiry.php" is a link explaining about how to find the date (from a NZ site). It also has a list of manufacturer's typical lifespans, but that doesn't have Jane in the list.

And sorry for the messed up way I tried to do links, but they should still work! :)

The date of manufacture is stamped on the seat somewhere, there is a video about this on you tube, which said that 6 years is the cut off. I will see if i can find it again.
