The instructions do not say but I wonder as it would be more convenient to take on plane if seat could be detached to use as booster.

no it doesn't. But it is more solid that a lot of seats in that age group.

A high back is safer that just a booster. If you are doing a lot of driving while away buy a cheap one that does separate and back in a case. or just take the one you have put in a bag and put in the hold. You could just get a booster and put in case.
You won't be able to use on the plain

we will be driven around for one day by a friend and then taking cabs - it's a short city break.

Bought a Graco booster seat (no back) for older one who normally uses Concord and might take younger one's (she's 4) Maxi Cosi Rodi.

Just thought that taking the the Maxi might have been too much and also a bit concerned about it being possibly damaged on plane.
