As new Infant car seat .... do I really just throw it away

We have an Isofix base Britax infant (rear facing) car seat, now outgrown.

Never been in an accident, and in great condition.

Do we really just throw it away at the Rubbish Tip?

Does the same apply to the isofix base?

We are an environmentally-minded family, and take great care in not throwing away things that still are in great condition and could be passed down, used by someone else, etc... But I can't find anywhere that would take a used car seat, even in as new condition, and it just seems criminal to chuck it in landfill.

I don't know of anywhere that will take them - I emailed our council to ask, but they couldn't offer any options.

ANTagony · 18/01/2011 13:20

ebay, freecycle, local free adds. If you can wait until summer then they go well at carboot sales.

If you can courier the isofix bases seam to sell quite well.

I brought mine from a car boot last summer.

The other thought is a spare set for a grandparent.

MegBusset · 18/01/2011 13:21

I would Freecycle it.

windymiller2 · 18/01/2011 13:23

yeah I would freecycle or ebay. I have sold a car seat on ebay, they sell quite well.

sazm · 18/01/2011 19:30

i would put it on ebay, someone will probably buy it,esp the base,i have sold a few carseats on ebay.

Whereabouts are you?

We have a Britax B Smart, but didn't get the infant carrier to match (got the Sleeper instead)

I agree with the others - it's criminal to throw it away if you know it hasn't been in an accident.

People will buy/take them - it's not entirely sensible, because you just don't know if you can trust the person selling it. I would buy one off of a friend, but never a stranger - but people do. (sorry ANTagony)

Sazisi · 19/01/2011 23:12

We just gave ours to a friend.

We are in Weybridge, Surrey.

I ebayed ours. I wouldn't buy one on ebay myself as you don't know whether it's been in an accident however I have no problem selling ours to someone else because I know it's safe.

AlaskaHQ · 20/01/2011 10:46

And when I asked at Sure Start about whether there was - say - a Women's Shelter nearby who might like it, plust various other baby bits we were trying to find a home for at the time, we were told 'oh there probably are such places in England, but not around here in Weybridge'

We used to live in USA and there were two great shelters who used to love donations of stuff (although not car seats I think) but we have really struggled to find such places here back in UK.

Our local children's A&E/ward take car seats so that they can get people home in taxis etc if they have come in in an ambulance without a car seat. You could contact your local midwives directly - they will know of someone who will be in need.

There will be a refuge somewhere in Surrey that would be very grateful for it.

Like others say, you can advertise it for sale with a clear conscience.
