Confused about when to change to group 2/3

DS is 2.5 and currently in rear facing britax izi combi. He is big for his age and his head is at the top of the seat. But the advice seems to be ambiguous, I read 'when their head grows above the seat' which seems to imply soon, but also when their eye level is at the top, which is completely different! Can someone clear this up for me? I just want him in the right seat...

It's eyes reach top. Had the same dilemma a while ago.

I thought it was head at top when rear facing, and eyes at top when forward facing.

If you ring the In Car Safety Centre (or one of the other places specialising in RF group 1 seats) they will know.

It´s eyes of tip of ears reach top when child´s head is leaning against the back of the seat. This counts for large rearfacing cars eats too.

Head reach top is for infant seats.

Because they sit more upright in the car, which means the children get pushed into the seat rather than upwards.

It allows rearfacing for another year or more. By the time the children´s head reach the top they´l be old enough not to need the recline position when sleeping IF they need a nap - many don´t at this time of their life.

When I read that a child has outgrown or is about to outgrow a large rearfacing seat at 3 years or less I wonder if the seat is used corectly OR if the parents have gotten the guidelines wrong. The seats allow harnessing for longer time also, both by weight (25 kg seats) and all of them by height.

The Britax Hiway which has a 57 cm seatback (internal meassurment) is one of the shortest rearfacing seats can accommondtae a 105-110 cm tall child.

Forwardfacing seats are typically outgrown by 95-98 cm, which is roughly 2½-3 years old.
