Could anyone advise me on the best car sat to get for ds. He is 4.5 months old and currently in a britax group 0+ car seat. He weighs just over 9kg and is very long. His feet have been sticking out of the seat for ages and now the top of his head is level with the top of the seat. Am I right in thinking that it is not safe to keep him in this car seat any longer? If so what should he go in next as he is not old enough to move into the next stage? Thanks.

ive been looking around been to 4 independant and john lewis and they all recommended the maxi cosi tobi

castleonthehill · 21/10/2010 17:59

My dd2 grew out of the maxi cosy tobi as they have to come out of it when their shoulders are level with the top slots. where as with the others they can go above and its more about where their head is.

After measuring seat I bought the britax duo which along with the evolva seamed to take the tallest child. ( she did then stay in it until she was 4 a year and a half after she grew out of the tobi. and she was still within the height it was weight she grew out on.

I didn't look at the other britax as I didn't want to spend lots on a seat just for a year or so some shops said she was fine to go in a high back booster but I felt she was to young and too short and not heavy enough

Thanks both, but I think that the maxi cosy tobi and britax duo and evolva are forward facing and I thought that he was to young to go into a forward facing seat (at 4.5 months.) Please correct me if i'm wrong as that would make it much easier to find one! Thanks.

Much too young, yes.

btw, I've heard bad things about the Tobi (quite easy for toddlers to escape from, so wouldn't recommend that)

Have a look at the next stage car seats (I think Britax do a good one) that can be rear facing.

Hi, could have a look at maxi-cosi opal. its 0+ to 1 and can be used rear and front facing and adjusts to fit from newborn to @4 years

hi, it sounds as though you;d be better with a erf seat. my ds is big for his age is already 20kgs at 2 and half!! he has the britax two way elite. the problem with the opal is that it only rf to 13kgs which will probably not be long if he is already 9kgs.

the twe stays rf to 25kgs and can be adjusted to make more room for longer legs. although ds still has it in the baby position and has enough room for his legs.

for more info look at www.rearfacing.co.uk

:)

elite.. that's the one I was trying to remember the name of

mamadiva · 21/10/2010 20:35

If you don't have enough room for the long term rear facer then a multi stage seat could be useful.

We used the Britax first class SI which does from birth to 4 years. t looks like a forward facing seat but it rear faces until approx 12-15m (or as long as weight under rear weight then turn it to a forward seat until 15k (ish)

pinkelephants · 22/10/2010 12:36

Thanks everyone for the replies. I hadn't heard of extended rear facing seats before but that is something I will definately be looking into. Does anyone know where you can see those seats? None of the stockists mentioned on the rearfacing website are anywhere near us and I wouldn't want to order one online without seeing one first and checking if it fit in our car. We are both quite tall and have the front seats quite a long way back so not sure if one of those seats would fit behind it? Sounds like the britax first class would be good if we can't fit an extended rear facing one in. Thanks again.
