Car seat for a one year old under 9kg?

Hi all - as the mum of a one-year old just under 9kg (8.75), I was wondering whether I need to change car seat? We'll be driving to France soon and the poor little one will be unhappy enough without the right car seat. Rear facing seems safer but forward facing less likely to make her sick...
Thanks a lot for advice xx

Hi there
Please do check out all the information on extended rear facing car seats. If you have a seat that lasts to 13kg you may not even need a new car seat yet. Regarding the point you make about sickness, my 14 month babies have always been rearfacing and have never been sick.....

If you get a bigger rear facing car seat your DD will be able to see out of the rear window/side window which will cut down on travel sickness.

DD1 rear faced to 4 y/o and was only sick once in the car (was looking at books and was sick later at the campsite as well), DD2 has never been car sick and is rear facing at 2.8 y/o. DD3 hasn't been car sick ever and is 9 m/o.

The only rear facing seats (that I know of) that don't start from 9kg are the Brio Zento and the Klippan KISS but if the weight of 8.75kg is a naked weight I'm sure with a nappy and clothes on they might be 9kg. Ask the HV to do a quick weigh fully clothed at your next clinic.

If your DD is over 9kg clothed there are lots of seats to chose from. I've got the following seats:-

Britax Two Way Elite (9-25kg) nice high top slots so will take a tall child.

Britax Nordic Secura (9-25kg) can adjust the recline without reinstalling seat but better for a shorter child (or one with a short torso).

Britax First Class 0-13kg rear facing and 9-18kg forward facing. I use this seat for DD3 who's about 6.5kg at 9m/o. She will be able to use this seat rear facing until about 2 y/o which will give DD1 & DD2 time to grow out of their seats yet only cost £90 which is a lot less than buying a 3rd rearfacer.

There are lots of seats here.

we've also never had any car sickness from either of our rear-facers

if she still fits in her infant carrier then tbh i['d just use that and then take your pick from an extended rear-facing seat at a later date

Thanks a lot for the responses, this is really helpful! And the list of seats is great. Maybe we'll just stick to our car seat and get a new one in the sales for later! Wish me luck with the long drive though... xx
