My mum recently saw a rheumatologist because she has very advanced osteoporisis and keeps getting more spinal fractures. She's 66. The rheumatologist recommended a blood test before looking at more serious bone strengthening medication. She had the blood test and the GP rang her on Tuesday to say the blood test shows she probably has myeloma. He referred to haematology on a cancer pathway and said she should get a call in a couple of days. She hasn't heard anything, she rang today and left a message on the voicemail, didnt get to speak to anyone.
I'm in a bit of a numb state, I assume it's very advanced because of how advanced the osteoporosis appeared to be, she's really bent and her hands are kind of lumpy. She said the GP said myeloma is often missdiagnosed as osteoporosis. So I'm assuming the worst to be honest. I cant face googling it.
I'm really not ready to lose my mum, not that anyone ever is. My dad died of lymphoma in 2022 and it just feels like the same on repeat, she's even the same age he was! It must be bringing vack some really traumatic memories for my mum.
How can I help her? Is it worth me ringing the hospital tomorrow? I can be pretty persistent with this kind of thing and I want to at least check they have the referral, I know these things can easily get lost.
I live about 2 hours away, i will try to go to appointments with her - will that actually be helpful given i can't guarantee I won't cry? No idea how I'll even manage given i have a job and 2 young kids. I'd love it if she could come and stay with me but I'm guessing it would delay treatment even more.
