As the title says really.
On permanent chemo, have had to take ill health retirement and my world has shrunk considerably. It’s like my brain wants to work, but my body wants to kill me off!

Ive just had another round of chemo and feel like shit. My mood is low, I can’t taste anything, water tastes like ash and I’m so so tired. I’m just so fed up this is my life now.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. There are really no words that will make it better. It is just shit.

Enigma54 · 15/06/2026 16:36

@annonymousse thanks. Yes it’s just shit, you are right. Just feeling down as the chemo side effects kick in.

@Enigma54 I'm really sorry you're going through this - for me, my taste changed as well - cold things gave me pins 'n' needles in my mouth and throat - many things just tasted of chemicals (like you I suspect).

I liked the Quaker instant 'make in two minutes' porridge packets.

My favourite drinks were warm Banana milk shake, original Coke warmed in the microwave and Fanta Lemon warmed in the microwave. I was fortunate in that I still liked Tea and coffee.

My Oncologist stressed that even when I was feeling very, very tired I must keep eating, even snacks, biscuits or chocolate because my body needed the calories to gain strength for the Chemotherapy - my quick mind jumped into action, "Can I have a prescription for chocolate and biscuits then?" - I got a grade 3 consultant stare.

I'm sorry I can't help any further - keep trying various things - even unusual things - until you find something you like.

I hope things go smoothly for you - best wishes - Dan

I’m sorry. Life is shit isn’t it. I found water tasted diabolical, the only thing I can stomach is sparkling water on chemo days/weeks.

how often do you have it?

Trumptontown · 15/06/2026 19:49

Would drinking through a straw help to minimise contact with your tongue?

Enigma54 · 16/06/2026 11:34

Thanks all, I appreciate the replies.
Just feeling down with it all. I’m so tired and can’t believe I’ve lost my job. My hair resembles a wire pan scrubber and I look a mess. It’s so bloody unfair! My brother NEVER gets anything wrong with him and there’s me, grappling with my 4th cancer diagnosis. I mean WTAF? ☹️

Yes this does work well, I agree.

@Bangersndmash chemo is every 3 weeks, forever ( or as long as it continues to work)

Water does indeed taste grim. I’ve taken to juice instead of water, purely because of how bad it tastes.

Thanks for your kind reply. It’s just hard isn’t it? Everything feels “ off” food and drink wise. I find myself munching on frazzles crisps and mounds of cheese because I think I crave salt and strong flavours. Spicey food is out because my mouth is sore.

Thanks again.
