Thyroid Nodule

I have had swollen lymph nodes for at least 16 weeks now including one "supraclavicular" above my left collarbone.

I finally had a scan on Tuesday and the radiologist said the lymph nodes were all just under 1cm so not a major concern but she had found a suspicious area on my thyroid.

She explained that it fell into the category of "not sure"...she couldnt leave it, and felt I should be seen by ENT who would likely do a biopsy.

She said she would send the report to both them and my GP and that she may be the person I go back to for the biopsy.

So far, (I know it's only been a few days!) I have heard nothing.

GP said the report is still "in progress" and they will make contact with me to arrange a review.

Whenever I've had scans in the past (tummy, kidneys) the report has always shown on my app the next day.

This time there is nothing.

I just want to know if I should be on the two week pathway or not? I hate waiting and not knowing!

Bern googling and understand I need to know if the nodule is U3 or 4 or 5 and the size?

Anyone had a similar experience?

Are they likely to get back to me soon?

Thank you

Hi OP, I have recent (2024) experience of this. I was pregnant at the time so investigations were limited and I had to wait until I’d had my baby for a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy as my biopsy was inconclusive (U3), and it turned out to be a benign follicular adenoma in the end. There was a hell of a lot of waiting, uncertainty and other nonsense along the way.

My journey was GP > 2ww for ENT > ultrasound guided biopsy > confusion over results and plan > ENT surgeon > surgery. I’ll link the thread I had about it at the time so you can see my timeline, although a lot of my posts on there might not be relevant for you.

Pregnant and on 2ww pathway as I’ve found a lump | Mumsnet

I posted recently having noticed a large lump in my neck, assumed my thyroid had just gone a bit wonky with pregnancy hormones so saw my GP yesterday...

Oh I didn't know they could shrink, that's interesting, hopefully mine will be the same!

I have been through this this year and found the process slow and frustrating at times.

I was put on the 2 week pathway the beginning of March and only found out I had cancer last week.

I had a biopsy that showed a possibly suspicious nodule, so I had a hemithyroidectomy and it was a very long 6 week wait for the pathology results.

I hope you get a positive result, the waiting is hard.

naughty40me · 08/06/2026 21:30

I got my scan results today. 3 nodules, 2 graded as U2 and one graded as U4.

2ww referral to ENT. Received an email from the hospital to advise they will contact me before Wednesday.

I'm worried but trying not to panic.

I’ve had a liquid cyst (not sure if yours is the same) and needed needle aspiration. The cancer markers were inconclusive. I was told biopsy will mean removing half of the small organ that it is. It was a 50-50 with likelihood of being benign. I left it alone and it never bothered me again.

naughty40me · 24/06/2026 17:38

Had my biopsies today, they did 2 core biopsies and a Fine Needle Aspiration on the thyroid nodule. Then 2 core biopsies on a lymph node that I have that also looks suspicious.

I'm convinced it's cancer. He had a registrar with him so I was listening to him talking her through it and I and had already researched a lot so understood the terms they used. I guess I just have to wait now.

My neck is so sore! He had to really rummage around and press hard as the nodule is so calcified. Ouch!

OP posts:
Thyroidsurgery · 24/06/2026 18:15

It's not the most pleasant thing. I could feel them scraping on the calcification on my nodule.

I was sore for a few days afterwards. Take it easy in the heat! Lots of nice cool drinks.

I had a very strong feeling mine was cancer too. The waiting was hard. I just needed to know for sure. It took a few weeks to get the results from the fna. Mine came back inconclusive. From what I've read that is common.

Be kind to yourself. The waiting is so hard. I hope they don't leave you waiting too long and you get a positive result.

hereismydog · 24/06/2026 20:19

Glad you’ve had your biopsies! I’m sorry you’re so sore, they really aren’t nice Sad lots of rest, you’ll probably feel a bit worse tonight and then hopefully a little better tomorrow.

I hope the results don’t take too long, that was the word part for me as I just wanted to know what we were dealing with. Mine did unfortunately come back inconclusive, so it wasn’t much of an answer when they did come back.

Sending you lots of good thoughts and well wishes ❤️

naughty40me · 24/06/2026 22:00

Thank you both ☺️ . So sorry youv'e been through the same.
This heat was certainly not my friend today!

I hope everyone is well.

So I've chased the hospital given that the USC pathway date was 6 July for a diagnosis. I understand that is just a target and not guaranteed though.

Anyway, cancer navigator kindly chased in the background and called me back.

I need to go in next week to see consultant surgeon regarding "further diagnostic tests".

I am guessing my result is indeterminate or something? I can't stand all this waiting!!!!

I'm not sure whether to ask for a copy of lab report. I need to see what's going on, would they even send it to me?

Thanks

The waiting is so hard. I found the waiting for a diagnosis the hardest bit. I am waiting for further surgery in a few weeks and it is somehow so much more manageable!

I think it's unlikely they'll just give you your results. You need to be told them in the right way and they have a duty to make sure you understand them properly. They also might want to make sure you have emotional support available depending on what they say.

naughty40me · 08/07/2026 04:15

Yes you're right I suppose they have to follow their policies and tell me in the best way.

I have no patience!

How are you holding up @Thyroidsurgery, its all such a long process isn't it. I hope you get your operation soon and that it all goes well with a speedy recovery 🙏 x
