How did you manage metallic taste during chemo?

How did you deal with the metallic taste during chemo? This is the second cycle and I feel I'm going to need some help here. I've read to keep taking sips of water, although water is a bit grim at the moment. I don't like mints very much but going to send hubby out for a range that I'm going to try next. Can you recommend any ways of deaking with the fact everything tastes gross when trying to eat and the fact there is always a metallic taste to my saliva between eating anything?

@EmailsaysOOO I'm afraid you'll have to keep trying different food until you find one that's not too bad.
You may find information on this thread useful - (I've posted my on it)
It's a tough process - good luck.

Oh that's not come out as I intended. I really am thankful. Somehow the tone could sound as if I'm not.

One of my friends found that very very fruity acidic fizzy drinks were the most effective thing, stuff like orange and lemon Fanta (own brand knock off tended to be more acidic and effective). My dad had the same experience when he was in organ failure and had oral thrush.

My OH went through bags and bags of foxes fruit flavoured sweets during his chemo. Tea and juice instead of water.

He also said he tried to find foods that didn't "clash" with the taste as much - e.g lamb sometimes has a metallic taste so it didn't taste too weird.

@InfoSecInTheCity thanks very much. I sent my husband out for Sprite and it does seem to be drinkable so that's excellent! Cheers

If you need sugar and calories then try freezing real orange juice or a mix or a range, lemon and some other fruits and eating it as a sorbet. It’s not going to be amazing nutritionally but really cold and really sour can sometimes be helpful with bad tastes and nausea.

Diluted Lemon barley water was the only thing I could drink on chemo. Everything else tasted like sewage 🤮

Witchonenowbob · 21/05/2026 16:37

I drank far too much full fat coke, it was the only thing I enjoyed.

Thankfully chemo finished and so did my craving.

Its really tough OP, keep trying different things.

Hi OP, I haven’t looked at the other threads but here are a few things that worked for me (16 cycles of chemo). Those fizzy sweets - lemon sherberts, fruit sherberts. Also, ice pops. Frozen bananas! Marmite on toast first thing, made with Jason’s sourdough (helped to take the coating off the mouth).
I was also prescribed with some mouthwash and a gel that I squirted into my mouth. I set “mouthcare” as an alarm on the phone to keep up with looking after the mucus membranes in my mouth.

It’s horrible going through it but it will pass and you’ll be even prouder of yourself.
