Bra for after breast surgery

Confuzzleduzzled · 23/04/2026 15:01

I’m having a lumpectomy but need a large amount removing so they will reduce the other boob to match. I’m a 32H now. I don’t know what size I will be but I need to get bras for post surgery.
Has anyone been in the same situation and can advise?

M&S offer a good range and I think they’re tax free. They will be able to assist.

Had BC last year, surgery, chemo and radio,

If you want to chat, PM me.

Oh yes ! Glad to help. Do you have breast cancer nurses to consult ? I didnt know what to buy either. I had a lumpectomy in one and mastectomy other side with implant. Your Consultant or Nurses shoukd advise.

If you're able to get to a bravissimo I found them very helpful (and they are tax free, will take it off at the till for you)

Venicelagoon · 23/04/2026 15:06

I was told to try Asda. But I was actually given a bra to wear straightaway for support and front fastening so easy to deal with when dressings there. Dont be afraid to seek advice.

Wishing you all the best with your surgery. X

Everyone says get front fastening, but you can do at front and swivel easy enough

M&S good move sports bras worth a look

I didnt like their post surgery bras

I mainly wore tu brand ones, but my cup about an E

Thanks everyone. The nurse suggested M&S or Asda and to get front fastening. I didn’t realise they give you one to wear after surgery. I was wondering how to buy the right size if I don’t know what size I am.
Is it best to avoid underwire at first? Do you have to sleep in it for a while?

I was a 38H and bought 38DD after my breast cancer reduction. M&S flexifit were really good. The hospital put me in a post surgical bra.

cancerycaramelbear · 23/04/2026 16:44

Definitely no wires!

VividDeer · 23/04/2026 17:08

I wasn't given one.

Try the m&s one at home before surgery
I found it uncomfortable and returned it.

Venicelagoon · 25/04/2026 12:10

I loved mine. Put it on straight after surgery while still in ward. Nurses checked next day on phone if I was wearing it. I slept in it too as very comfortable. Kept it on for ages. Eventually I was able to fit into old underwired bras but it took time.

Iocanepowder · 25/04/2026 12:15

Hi op, i used to be a bra fitter.

Yes definitely no wires for a little while.

They may give you something anyway but i would wait until you are well enough to get a bra so you can get properly fitted for one and try different styles. As others have said, there are post surgery bras but if they don’t work out for you, sports bras are also an option or crop-top like bras. M&S and Bravissimo staff will be able to give you a proper fit with different options. John Lewis is also an option.

It can also depend where your incisions are located in terms of what suits you. I had a different surgery myself not long ago that was on my bra line so had to factor this in.

good luck xx

Iocanepowder · 25/04/2026 12:17

Sorry op forgot to mention that in regards to what size you might be afterwards, please do also factor in swelling that may take time to go down. The bra fitters should also be trained on this.
