Teenage son cancer survivor with unbearable anxiety

WardenBreeze · 07/03/2026 20:26

My son has Leukaemia when he was 7. He is in remission after 3.5 years of treatment and 4 years of PTSD and his anxiety is through the roof every day. It’s been ten years, I love him so much but I am completely burnt out with supporting him and being on call 24/7. I just don’t know what else to do, how to help him, where to find help. I feel like I have done everything possible and don’t know which way to turn now. Has anyone else experience of this to help me feel less alone or any real advice. Thanks

I've heard good things about EMDR

I'm not a doctor but my relative survived a coma and was recommended this for anxiety.

Sorry about your son. It sounds hard.

I’m so sorry for both your son and for you having to go through this. Have you asked either the macmillan team or one of the childhood cancer trusts if they have any recommendations for support with this. It is so much that the whole family goes through.

I was going to say EDMR.

Also if you have the money l’d pay for a private Pyschiatrist. Medication could help

That’s really helpful. I will call clic Sergant and teenage cancer trust to see if they have help available

Hi! I am in remission from cancer treatment, although treated as an adult not a child. I'd be happy to try and help you and your son find some support and resources. Your son probably doesn't want to talk to a 30 odd year old woman but if be happy to if that would help him - it's a scary world navigating life after cancer as an adult.

I think he's a touch too young but Shine charity is great for those who have had a cancer diagnosis in their 20s, 30s and 40s. They might know of support for younger people, too?

Let me know if I can help!

I second EMDR. Make sure the skin person administering it is fully qualified. Your son is suffering health anxiety which I suffered from.
