A very close relative has stage 4 oesophageal cancer which at stage 4 is inoperable. We really hoped they could have chemo but because they have lost so much weight they weren’t able to until they hopefully gained weight with a feeding tube. Luckily he gained enough weight and was hopeful he would be able to start treatment but then he got pneumonia and the doctors said he could no longer have chemo. Now the cancer has spread to other organs and he’s not having any treatment at all.
It feels so unfair that the chance for treatment has now been taken away from him. It feels so sad.
has anyone got experience with this particular cancer that they can share?…Feel so sad!

Hi,

Perhaps, you can speak with Macmillan Cancer Support and they might help in answering your questions. They are brilliant and worth the try! Good luck!

I'd agree with this - there is a specific forum within their Online Community for Oesophageal Cancer, and there are also support lines you can call to talk to trained staff

I'm so sorry, that sounds really tough.

Imaginary86 · 13/01/2026 15:44

I was wondering if anyone had personal experiences of this

Sorry for your loss. It’s really horrible. Did your husband surgery or chemo? The doctor has advised family member May only have a few months at most now 😔

Yes I lost my mum to this most brutal of cancers. Once it had spread it was a matter of weeks. I’d be looking at a lovely hospice who will be able to manage pain relief and keep him comfortable. I’m so sorry that I can’t offer any more comfort 💐

@Imaginary86 he didn’t live long enough. He was diagnosed on the 2nd of June after an emergency admission through an and e. Came home on the 8th and died on the 19th at home with me. No follow up care / macmillan or hospice care or care help of any kind. Nothing whatsoever. His Gp wasn’t even notified.
Luckily the emergency out of hours ambulance based doctor on call managed to put in place the community nurses (used to be district nurses) who at least administered pain relief after a week at home and for the last three days end of life drugs. Ambulance service and paramedics were a god send in getting this help. No one else would help us.
The day after he died a consultants appointment to discuss further treatment plans came through. They were shocked when I rang to say he had passed away at home.
I truly hope you fair better.

i was left to deal with everything alone. I now have pray and complicated grief. Therapy is slowly helping.
