My uncle has cancer - how advanced is it?

Hi everyone,
i recently found out my beloved uncle has lung cancer. I live abroad, away from my family, and I don’t know much of what is going on (I also think they’re not telling me everything). I have never known anyone who suffered from cancer and I don’t know what to make of this, can anyone tell me what exactly this means?

The information I do have is:

He has lung cancer, doctors also found two other tumors - one in his spleen and one in his spine - the one in his spine is cancerous (I don’t know about the one in his spleen) and he can’t walk anymore. He is in his early sixties.

My mum told me it wasn’t metastatic, but my cousin says it is.
My uncle seems defeated and doesn’t seem to have hope, he keeps smoking despite doctors instructions.

Is it possible that he would have a tumor in his spine if it hasn’t spread? Like two different cancers?
Does it mean it’s stage 4?

Hes going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy to deal with the pain in his back.

Thank you for your help, I know I’m probably not making much sense but my head is all over the place.

Hello, I’m so sorry Partym. It’s so hard when someone we love dearly is diagnosed. Sadly, it sounds like stage 4 as it’s moved away from the primary tumour in the lung making it metastatic. There are some amazing targeted drug therapies available that oncologists can offer depending on the type of cancer/mutation your uncle has. For example, if he has non small cell lung cancer with the EGFR mutation there’s a drug called Tagrisso that works really well, shrinking tumours and stabilising the disease. I really hope his oncologists are able to offer something like this. Sending love and a hand hold 🩷
