Should we be worried?

Does anyone have any experience of going for a CT scan and then having a fairly quick reply to say an appt has been booked and should bring someone with you? Worried that asking you to bring someone could signal bad news but also wondering if it might be something they always suggest.

It could be so they can listen and take notes and if there are further tests xxx

I think it depends on who the appointment is for and the circumstances of the ct scan. Sorry that’s really unhelpful but I’ve seen both - quickly arranged appointments with and without suggesting someone be there. Also I’ve personally had follow up appointments arranged before I’ve even had the scan so I’m not too sure! I was trying to be reassuring and I think it’s an unhelpful reply now sorry

Not unhelpful at all, thanks for replying. It’s for an adult initially having chest pain, symptoms stopped since scan and is in the respiratory clinic.

I have a family member who had quite worrying symptoms and was sent for a test. They were brought back in very quickly for the results and told to bring someone with them. The tests were clear.
In their case, it was because the symptoms were still worrying and they were planning further investigations.

What was the reason for the scan? And is it for you or for someone you support or care for? I have cancer and I’ve never been told to bring anyone with me to any appointments (I never have either). When they told me the results of my tests, the nurses literally tracked me down when I was in the hospital for another appointment and whisked me off into a side room, completely unexpectedly.

In my experience, if you have a good consultant, they will get you in quickly and let you know what’s happening. I’ve had scan results come back within 5 days. I’ve had appointments booked within a week or so.

To me it sounds like there is possibly more they want to investigate and they aren’t fobbing you off, which is good. I don’t think it necessarily means it’s bad news though. Very much depends on the context of the referral and investigations so far.

I had a recent recall from a pelvic ultrasound. GP rang me at work to reassure me about a light spot they had seen and were concerned about. I ended up having a hysteroscopy to investigate this abnormality and it turned out to be nothing. I’m always just glad we get the chance to be checked out, even though it takes a few weeks these days.

In that case I would say it’s likely there will be further testing, especially if the scan was clear because you’d need to know what was causing the symptoms xx
