On 2 ww pathway and Tesco have cancelled my travel insurance

We booked travel insurance (£60) to cover us for a week's camping in France as a family. In the meantime my GP found a couple of lumps last week, so I am booked in for a mammogram when I return. I phoned Tescos (as per the Terms and Conditions) and they have now said I am uninsurable by any company for insurance.

Ironically they said if I was diagnosed with cancer then they could cover me, but not while I'm under investigations. I don't get it!

Has anybody been in this situation? Should I just insure my husband and daughter and go uninsured? I have a GHIC.

Yes you're essentially uninsurable whilst undergoing or awaiting investigation i am afraid

victorianbaby · 05/08/2025 15:58

All insurances will exclude you with anything you are waiting an investigation on.

Soontobe60 · 05/08/2025 16:06

If you knew, or suspected this possibility before you took out the insurance then you won’t be covered. If the illness came about after taking out the insurance you should be able to receive a refund.

BlackCatGreyWhiskers · 05/08/2025 16:07

Would a European health card help you at all?

Abra1t · 05/08/2025 16:12

If you're going to anywhere reasonably easy to get home from in France, I'd just go anyway. Would the rest of your party be covered? If you feel otherwise well, I'd just do it. You have the GHIC. Just take extra care of yourself while you're there.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/08/2025 16:28

Is that totally uninsurable, what if your luggage is lost or passport stolen, or just medical side of things.

PinotGrigios · 05/08/2025 16:31

Thanks so much everyone for the speedy replies. I understand not being covered for potential cancer (nothing is likely to happen during one week after all) but thought I could still be covered for breaking my leg, or our ferry being cancelled etc.
@BlackCatGreyWhiskers yes I have a GHIC
@Soontobe60 no this has happened since we bought the policy so should get a full refund.
The problem is that now they don't seem to want to cover my husband and daughter either .... I will do some more research and hopefully get someone else. The Tesco operator was pretty rude so happy to take my money elsewhere!

Can you get a private mammogram before you go? I got into private breast clinic next day after finding a lump, diagnosed, treated (cyst) and sent home within an hour. It did cost £500 though as this was pre health insurance.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/08/2025 16:39

Oh, that's bad, I thought it might just be anything to do with your thing you are waiting for, maybe some other company will insure you with medical exclusions. There must be loads of people in this situation how long the NHS takes.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, sadly we can't afford it. We have been saving for 8 months to go on this holiday! My mammogram was supposed to be today which would have been perfect, but yesterday it got rescheduled. It's been a moderately crap few days to be honest; I have a family history of BC so it'd be nice to know either way.

I'm confused if this has happened since buying the policy? Isn't this what insurance is for? Are you saying they are refunding your holiday in full now under the policy so you can't go but will get your holiday cost back (less excess)?

I know you are uninsurable if undergoing tests as they can't assess risk as no one knows what you have (or, hopefully, don't have). But surely that's if you try to buy the policy now. Which you aren't.

user593 · 05/08/2025 16:46

@Navigatinglife100 I’m guessing OP timed the policy to cover their holiday dates and only their holiday dates, is that right OP?

Mulledjuice · 05/08/2025 16:49

Try contacting Macmillan/breast cancer charity, it's a really common problem and they will have the latest. Fingers crossed.

Franpie · 05/08/2025 16:49

You have a GHIC card and are not even flying. I’d just go.

Knackered1 · 05/08/2025 16:51

My insurance explained to me it was only for any illness relating to the investigation. Everything else (eg broken leg/lost luggage etc etc etc) was covered. It was with All Clear.

yes that's right - I bought it just to cover next week, and in the small print it says to call them if you start medical investigations before leaving, which I did ....

Ok thanks maybe I'll try them - that sounds more like what I was expecting!

I would definitely contact another insurance like those recommended above, it's probably that Tesco insurance is for people without medical conditions that need a cheap basic insurance.

Enrichetta · 05/08/2025 16:58

Yes, do contact Macmillan.

Also consider using a broker rather than organising insurance yourself.

FairyGodDaughter · 05/08/2025 16:58

Tesco sound appalling. I can recommend StaySure at least for pre-existing conditions, I have found them excellent. I don’t know if they will insure in your situation but might be worth a try.

DartmoorWanderer · 05/08/2025 17:00

This is common. Even the most specialist of insurances will charge an arm and a leg.

@FairyGodDaughtereven they charge a fortune when waiting for tests. My dad is waiting for an angiogram and he was quoted £750 for a week in Italy!
