Just that really. Family member just diagnosed with bowel cancer and waiting on results of a biopsy taken from a liver "lesion" of which there are a few. Obviously we're dreading bad news but just wondering if anyone has had any other cause for lesions given the circumstances?
No symptoms so all a big horrible shock.

I've had bowel cancer but not the lesions- but from memory being on a couple of bowel cancer forums these often turn out to be harmless- once you start getting CT scans and the like done all sorts of things that would otherwise have passed by completely unnoticed crop up - sometimes cancerous, but often benign.

Thank you so much. This is obviously what we're all hoping for and exactly what I wanted to hear. I know it could go either way and we'll know soon but it's hard not to just assume the worst.

How did your family member get on?
I am in a similar situation with my father at the moment and I am feeling really worried

Whereishenow · 06/08/2025 00:07

I'm really sorry to say it wasn't good news. I hope it is for your dad x

Oh I am so sorry to hear that. 😔
My Dad has an MRI to check his liver spot on Saturday so dreading the result.

Whereishenow · 06/08/2025 13:00

We're waiting to hear what the treatment plan is. It seems it's just waiting waiting waiting. Hope your dad's turns out to be unrelated.

The waiting is so hard isn’t it? 😔
My Dad had his colonoscopy nearly 4 weeks ago and has his upper body MRI on Saturday so hoping we don’t have to wait too much longer, although I also feel so anxious about the results.
I hope your relative gets a treatment plan soon. X

My dad had surgery today to remove a tumor from his colon. Earlier scans showed some tumors in his lungs, and they also removed four tumors from his lungs during the surgery. The lung tumors are probably cancerous and have likely spread from the colon tumor.

I was going to write a post myself but just saw this one.

Can I hear more stories, good or bad, with details if it’s not too difficult for you to share? I’ve read a lot but would really like to hear some real-life experiences and advice if anyone is willing to help.

Thank you.

I hope your Dad makes a speedy recovery from his surgery. It is such a scary time isn’t it?

My Dad was diagnosed with a large rectal tumour 4 weeks ago and the CT has shown up something on his liver so he had to have an upper body MRI on Saturday. I am really anxious for the results but at the same time we really need to know what we are facing and what the treatment plan is.

Sorry that I don’t have many words of wisdom, but just wanted to let you know that you and your Dad are in my thoughts.

Hi both. Hoping for good news for both of you. We've got a treatment plan now. 10 weeks chemo, then a break and rescan to see if tumors have shrunk. Best case they have and then surgery, but if not followed by a second round of a different drug.
They're focusing on the liver right now and less concerned about the bowel. I think probably because the liver is a more vital organ? I'm not really sure of the rationale if I'm honest. We've had it confirmed that it is bowel cancer that spread to liver rather than the other way around. I think that's better than if it was liver first but I'm not really sure.

Thank you so much. I have miss written in my original post. Not his lungs. It was his liver. So they removed big tumor from his colon (right side) and 4 other tumors removed from his liver not lungs.
thank you so much for your lovely message. Your dad is in my thoughts too 🙏🙏 liver surgery is possible and can be very effective if there is cancerous tumors in his liver. I hope they are not cancerous. I find the waiting bit very stressful and I am far away from him. He lives in my home country. It’s also very hard

I think it is rare for the liver to be the primary site of cancer. It’s very common for bowel cancer to spread to the liver first, and the liver is almost always the area it spreads to.
How big is the tumour in the bowel? Why can’t they remove it?

My dad’s story began when he had pain under his right ribcage. He had scans, and they showed some suspicious tumours in his liver. Then the doctor wanted to do a colonoscopy, and I thought, “Why a colonoscopy when you’ve already seen suspicious tumours in his liver? Look at the liver first.”

But the doctor suspected liver metastases from bowel cancer because it is extremely common for bowel cancer to spread to the liver and he wasn’t wrong. My dad’s primary cancer is in his bowel, and the tumours in his liver are metastases from it.

Today they removed all of his tumours, including one from his bowel and several from his liver. Now they have to examine these tumours for margins and lymph node involvement. If the margins are clear, that is good news. They are focusing on curing it. If not, it is still not hopeless, they will focus on controlling the cancer.

I am glad you have a treatment plan now and really hope the chemotherapy is a success.

I have a feeling my Dad will be in a similar situation as bowel cancer often spreads to the liver so as soon as I heard they had seen something on his liver I feared it must have spread. I hope we hear something in the next few days as the not knowing is awful.

Your story gives me hope that they might offer surgery if the cancer has spread to the liver.

I hope your Dad recovers well from the surgery. It is such a worrying time isn’t it? At times it still doesn’t seem real to me.

P00hsticks · 13/08/2025 11:16

@pinkchampagne1 I'm still thinking of you and your dad - sorry you are still waiting for a treatment plan. The liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself, so the good news is that if there is cancer there that can be removed by surgery, it can completely repair itself within a few months.

Thank you, that is reassuring to hear.

My dad had his upper body MRI on Saturday and I think they have their meetings on Wednesdays, so I am hoping we hear something in the next few days. 🤞

My dad has just heard that he has a face to face appointment with the colorectal surgeon next Tuesday, so hopefully we will have more information and a treatment plan next week. 🤞

It’s very worrying time. I just want to have looooong sleep and when I wake up I just want to hear that my dad is healthy and recovered.
he had surgery yesterday and recovering but he has lots of pain. I feel really sore too like I have sympathy pain.
how are your family handling it all? We all have different ways to handle. I have to read and research a lot.

Oh your poor dad - I hope they can manage his pain. 😔

My family have all handled my dad’s diagnosis in different ways too. My dad kind of goes into denial mode (he was hoping the biopsy would show it was a polyp despite us being told it was almost definitely cancer) but I can see it is worrying him deep down. My mum cried a lot when she found out and has a lot of sleepless nights. My sister wasn’t expecting the diagnosis so it was a massive shock and she got really upset and feared she was going to lose him.
I am trying to remain positive and like you, I am reading a lot and like to hear of positive outcomes as I can’t bring myself to think of worst case scenarios.
I totally get what you are saying about wanting to wake up and it all be over. I feel like I am living in a bad dream I cannot wake up from. 😔

My mum has bowel cancer. She has a lesion on her liver turned out to be a cyst.
