Hysteroscopy- usually just polyp removal which will be biopsied or a uterine lining sample taken for biopsy too

Had a hysteroscopy for post menopausal bleeding and an abnormal scan last week. The scan showed some thickening of the endometrium, a small polyp, a fibroid and a cyst on an ovary. I have a memory that the hysteroscopy was supposed to include polyp removal including a biopsy of it and a biopsy of the thickened lining (obviously I can’t lay my hands on this paperwork), however on the discharge papers it just says polypectomy and biopsy of it. The unit was very busy and I was the last patient of the day. Would the procedure normally include a biopsy of a sample of the endometrial lining too?

I had both done at my last Hysteroscopy and had the results a couple of weeks later. I then had a Mirena coil fitted at my local GP surgery, to deal with the thickened womb lining. All was well.

Thankyou. I’ve found the gynaecologist paperwork which is hard to read (doctor’s handwriting!), which seems to say biopsy + removal of polyp. I hope the surgeon didn’t make a mistake. It’s good to get rushed through on the 2 week wait pathway however I’m a little worried that the womb lining biopsy has been overlooked in the rush. I saw on the paperwork on the NHS app that my GP had requested a CA125 blood test for suspected ovarian cancer, however that didn’t come back on the results and the gynaecologist said that it hadn’t been done, so I’ve had to go into surgery to ask them to do that. Luckily it came back as normal.

Does the biopsy not refer to an endometrial biopsy? The polyp would have been removed and sent for histology in its entirety, it wouldn’t have been biopsied as such.

Form says procedure was hysteroscopy + biopsy + removal of polyp.
On the scan report it says that the endometrium is ‘poorly defined’ so I thought that was the reason for a biopsy of it. Uterus is ‘heterogeneous.’

I would assume that biopsy refers to the endometrial biopsy then, but they could have been clearer in their documentation! Do you have a follow up appointment at all where you’ll
be able to clarify? Otherwise you can always contact your consultant’s secretary and they should be able to check for you or get someone to contact you.

Thankyou, the hysteroscopy was 1 week ago and I am awaiting the result. Hopefully when I get the result there will be further information and an option to check. The GP when she put me on the two week pathway at the start used the word biopsy. I can chase it up when I get the histology result.

To be honest depending on how they took the polyp out they’ll have probably got a decent amount of lining anyway, and it all kind of goes in the same pot to be examined. It should be obvious anyway when the results come through. Fingers crossed the results come nice and speedily and are reassuring!

Thankyou, the scan said that the lining was focally thickened where the polyp was, so hopefully it will provide more insight into the area of issue. Thanks for your thoughts.

I think you'll probably get the information needed from what's been done
