DCIS

Hello, I had surgery on Tuesday following a diagnosis of DCIS, stage 0. I was 1 of 4 on the ward who was having surgery for the first time. The others were on their second surgery, due to not having clear margins.

This has made me anxious and I have it in my head that my margins will not be clear either and I am going to totally flop my exams from the stress. I know it sounds silly as health is more important.

Has anyone here had success with their first surgery resulting in clear margins?

Yes, one surgery and all done for me. I was stage 2. My recovery was also pretty quick and straight forward.

The other lady who was in straight after me also had clear margins (we caught up at our post op check ups).
The lady in my support group that I chat to also had clear margins.

I have read about people needing a second op, but I have never met anyone in person who needed one because the margins weren't good. I don't think it's very common.

Was your diagnosis recent? I found the shock and stress was worse while the news was sinking in. Talking about it helped some.

I was shocked and worried. I have exams coming up and a young child to look after, which made it stressful.

Had a mammogram in December. They said I had calcifications and there was nothing to worry about. A month later I was called in for a biopsy. 2 weeks later I was told I had pre cancer cells and needed surgery. 3 weeks later surgery...

I am worried I will not have clear margins but saying that, I am also so grateful and feel lucky because it could have been a lot worse. I really feel for those who are not in such a good position.

The surgery itself wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be. I am also recovering quickly. Have pains, but nothing major.

I'm pleased to hear you are recovering and your margins are clear.
