Breast Cancer - how does it feel?

WinterColdBrrrr · 17/02/2025 08:56

I have a 5cm lump (doctor said) in my breast and it is causing me pain. I went to the doctors valentines day and she has referred me to get tested for breast cancer - the appointment is another week away.

I am terrified. I have 5 children under the age of 15.

Im hoping its nothing but i know its something.
Others who have had breast cancer how did you physically feel? Were you breathless ( i am overweight and have high blood pressure so it might he that).

If it is cancer at what stage am i - what physically should i be feeling.

Sorry you are feeling worried. Try not to panic - apparently painful lumps are much less likely to be cancerous. According to this only 3-6% of breast lumps are cancerous:

So worth checking out but really you do have statistics on your side.

Best of luck!

I felt no different and did not have a tangible lump. Mine was picked up by a mammogram. Even my surgeon said he couldn’t feel a lump, just some slight thickening.

As a pp has said, most lumps are not sinister.

wishing you well. Keep busy and do not google.

Melancholyflower · 17/02/2025 19:35

Like the previous poster I felt absolutely fine. My lump was picked up by routine mammogram; the only pain/discomfort I had was from the treatment, but had no symptoms from the actual cancer.

JackieGoodman · 17/02/2025 19:38

No pain in my lump, and no other symptoms (<edited to add this)
Hope you get all clear Flowers

I had a small lump and actually felt like a fraud, as although I was suffering from breast cancer, I didn’t feel ill.

Shutupyoutart · 17/02/2025 19:56

i recently had to go to the breast clinic for around 4-5 cm breast lump that was painful was terrified of cancer too and it turned out to be a breast abscess but it gave me quite the scare try not to panic op it could be any number of things and it is generally a good sign that there's pain with it as cancerous lumps typically don't have pain (not saying that some don't of course ) I hope all is clear for you and it's something benign. sending you a handhold I know you must be feeling so on edge ❤️

AndThereSheGoes · 17/02/2025 20:01

My friend has just been diagnosed. She had been feeling quite tired and run down for a few months despite being really healthy with diet and exercise.
They caught it early and it's all good.

NCDailyGame · 18/02/2025 04:45

OP do not panic. The outcome won't change, it'll only stress you out and make you feel worse.

I recently found a tiny hard lump and I saw the doc and was referred on a 2ww. Got my appointment Wednesday (so total wait time 16 days). I feel like a total fraud and keep thinking I should cancel, also I keep reading how rare it actually is to have a cancerous lump/diagnosis.

I found it cause I was watching tv with my hand on my boob and as I moved it, I felt this little like piece of gravel. Now on inspection my brain has created about another 4 lumps which I know aren't there, probably just my ribs as I am very flat chested and quite small in size.

The only things that are different is that I was recently diagnosed with anaemia, I have raging headaches every day and I am exhausted, however, I am perimenopausal, so I am putting it down to that. Plus, I have had OTT excessive B12 in my blood tests for the last year, my test don't even come back with a number anymore, just 1500>.... so I can't imagine that's helping with me feeling cruddy.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/02/2025 04:54

I'm sorry you're going through this OP. Waiting for appointments is the worst. Most lumps are not cancer.

I was diagnosed last summer, my lump was painful, and for a couple of months before I got my diagnosis, I was incredibly, abnormally tired. But otherwise felt okay

WinterColdBrrrr · 19/02/2025 00:38

Thankyou everyone.
Is there anyway to be seen sooner?

Ive just found some more lumps but in my other breast. Should i tell me GP this or just wait until next week for the appointment?

I'd just wait for appointment, radiologist (doing ultrasound) is best person to tell if lump is a concern, they could see that one of mine was nothing to worry about, normal breast tissue, the other was concerning and they were proved correct when biopsy result came back.

I know its hard but try not to worry as it doesn't change anything, most are benign but if not, then most are treatable if caught in good time Flowers

I found a lump in my armpit last week too so also waiting for the referral appt (mine is next Wednesday too). I'm 35 weeks pregnant with my serving but an older mum and so worried too about what it could all mean. I made the mistake of reading the referral document and notes and he had physically written suspected metastatic secondary cancer and it's really freaking me out. I can't get an earlier appt so just trying to get through the next week and hoping as much can get sorted before baby is here as I can. I have been feeling ill for the whole pregnancy really but it gets put down to that so no idea if I have any other symptoms apart from the hard lump

BlueJoy · 14/06/2025 06:44

My main symptom was pain - a stabbing pain - in the tumour and in my armpit. I was a size 8 without dieting too.

Notjustabrunette · 14/06/2025 20:08

I didn’t feel anything. Totally normal. I only just about felt a change in my breast, which turned out to be an aggressive tumor. I had a mastectomy this week, and now I’m knackered from the op.

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 17/06/2025 15:02

Haven’t noticed you on the other thread @Notjustabrunette hop in over and say hi. We are all in a similar boat over on Likely Breast Cancer after ultrasound Thread 2
