Breast lump and fast referral

I have a lump in my breast. I saw a GP this morning who gave me a thorough examination. The lump is in my upper inner quadrant and the GP could not feel anything anywhere else. The lump is also mobile but she mentioned something about 2cm. I was terrified at the appointment so not sure I took it all in.

My GP referred me on the 2 week wait which I am grateful for. The hospital called me this afternoon and have booked me in for next Monday so a very fast turnaround.

I'm pleased I have been referred so quickly but then it got me more worried that it is something bad. What are your thoughts? Should I worry even more or just be thankful that I am being seen quickly?

The speed of your appointment will be just what they have available, try not to read anything into that. Lots of lumps turn out to be nothing, sending you positive vibes xx

Beamur · 09/12/2024 19:05

It's usually a 2 week pathway. Most lumps are harmless.
I've been and it was just hormonal/lumpy tissue. Always hugely stressful though - have you got someone you can talk to? Go with you to the appointment?

Thanks ladies. I'm finding it such a worry. My partner will be coming with me fortunately.

I've been in this situation once before when I was 28 and naively went to the appointment alone. Everything was fine but it was a worrying experience and I burst into tears when I left the hospital. I'm early 40s now with a young family and worry even more than ever 😥

I don't want to worry my parents or in laws yet.

I had a scare in late 20's...at 53 I found a lump. The sonographer told me with glee I had a family of little cysts! 3 to be exact. I saw 3 departments and had the results there and then. Came home a happy bunny with my new family! Have an appointment for routine mammogram on 30 /12 at 4.18pm....Very exact!! We'll see when I actually get seen...

When I last went with a lump my GP said 'I will have a feel of it but tbh I'll refer you anyway as that's what we do'. So it's no indication of anything especially troubling but they want to make sure. Which is good.

I hope your little family have moved on! Glad to hear everything was ok for you. Hope your mammogram goes well. I wonder if it will be on time?!

I think the fact that it's mobile is a good sign. I have a lump the size of a golf ball in my right breast that has been there for years- it's fibroadenoma. They call it breast mouse because it moves around. So it sounds like it can very much be that. The urgent referral is standard although I know how scary that can seem. Wishing you the best and hope you get some reassurance soon

Probably not much help but I volunteer on reception at a specialist breast unit in a major general hospital.
The % of new patients on the 2 week referral leaving with a big smile on their face is about 98, I would say.

GlumBear · 09/12/2024 19:27

Statistics show that 9/10 lumps are benign - great that you are getting seen so quickly. That means they can tell you sooner so you worry for less time!

Good luck and stay positive!

That's amazing that you volunteer and thanks for the positivity. I hope I'm smiling this time next week. I feel so grouchy with everyone at the moment.

All breast lump referrals are on the 2 week pathway. I had one in August, I suddenly noticed a 3cm lump in one breast. Turned out to be a fatty lump that I only noticed as I lost weight.
The fact yours moves is good, cancerous ones don't tend to do that. I hope it all works out for you.

LibbyL92 · 09/12/2024 19:42

I had the same a few years ago! Mid 20s at the time. Was out on the 2 week pathway. All turned out fine and doctor said most cases turn out to be nothing and it’s very common!

hard not to worry, but not too long wait x

UncharteredWaters · 09/12/2024 19:46

I refer pretty much every breast lump as a usoc cancer referral because until proven otherwise that’s exactly it.
getting an appt in a few days is not unusual, especially when trying to squeeze in at xmas!
mobile small lumps are much more reassuring than larger craggy things.
fingers crossed for you x

SummerFeverVenice · 10/12/2024 10:29

Wishing you luck next week.

If it is cancer, everyone here is lovely and helpful and another reassurance is that treatment is a lot better and more successful these days so try and stay positive.

BigDahliaFan · 10/12/2024 10:34

Exactly the same happened to me - twice, it's a 2 week referral path, first time it was mammogram and they decided it was a cyst and booked me in for another mammogram in 6 months.

It didn't go so next time it was a biopsy and a bit of a wait for the results but it was all fine.

It is worrying but most things aren't bad news. Be grateful they are seeing you quickly.

AnnaMagnani · 10/12/2024 10:39

There's a move for women to be able to self refer to breast clinic as basically GPs will refer every lump there, so seeing your GP is just an extra step.

It's a breast clinic not a breast cancer clinic - 90% or more women won't have breast cancer.

5831bob123 · 17/12/2024 06:46

Update - I've had a mammogram, ultrasound and core needle. They think it is likely to be a fibroadenoma. Now it's the agonising 2 week wait for the results. I'm feeling sore and tired todY.

Fingers crossed! Sounds like good news.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/12/2024 19:37

I hope they are right. When I had my biopsies I was told “likely cancerous” and it was.

WarriorN · 22/12/2024 08:31

Fingers cross for you. The main thing is that you're being seen very quickly.

If it helps, although mine was cancerous I also had a fibro thingy, which is what I went to the gp about.

The cancerous one was estimated to be around 2 cm at the scan but in the end was only 9 mm.

(I would really like to know what the rest was. I like to think my body was building a wall of defence around it!)

Best of luck. The odds seem to be in your favour. I hope you manage to put it aside enough to enjoy xmas with your family 💐
