Complex ovarian cysts

Has anyone had a similar experience to me and it turned out not to be cancer? I went to the GP in September to get started on HRT (I’m 53 and am 2 years post menopausal) and mentioned that I had intermittent cramps in my lower abdomen. She did a range of blood tests including a CA125 which came back elevated at 41. I was then put on the suspected cancer 2WW to have a scan. I then had an internal scan which showed a complex ovarian cyst - 5 x 3 x 4.7 cm on one side with cystic and solid areas, no convincing vascularity and slight calcification. The other ovary was just slightly bulky and 11 ml. I immediately panicked about the cyst with the solid areas! I have just had a Gynaecology appointment and saw a nurse who sent me for another internal scan. She didn’t give me any information about this scan afterwards and just said that there were ovarian cysts on both sides and that I needed to have my ovaries and tubes removed. I’m now convinced I have ovarian cancer and just wanted to know if anyone had been sent to have a CT scan or an MRI before going straight to surgery?

Hi OP, sorry no one has replied to you.

I'm pretty much on the same boat, I had a transvaginal ultrasound on 05 December and they asked me to repeat on 16 January, so of course I'm going to spend Xmas and new year panicking about cancer. Let us know how you are. Peace and strength to you

Hi @BetsyBobbin - thank you for replying & sorry you are in the same boat. I had my oophorectomy on Friday and am getting on ok. I had the left ovary with cyst and fallopian tube removed but the surgeon left my right one as he didn’t think the cyst looked suspicious and it was stuck to the urethra and would have caused complications if he’d tried removing it. I don’t have the histology results yet and probably won’t hear anything until after Christmas so I’m
keeping my fingers crossed! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you too and hope that your second scan in January doesn’t show anything suspicious. Did your first scan show a complex cyst? My surgeon said that the scan results very much depend on who has done the scan and how they interpret what they’re seeing which is probably why my two scans said different things about the right ovary. Wishing you all the best for 16th January and I hope you can enjoy your Christmas & new year. Big hugs to you x

Hi there!

First of all I'm happy that you've already had your operation and I'm truly hoping you hear some good news re histology when the results are back. At least that part is over.

I didn't hear anything about the results, just had a call saying I needed to do the scan again as they found something in my right ovary. Hospital admin shouldn't be able to say things like that to people because all I'm thinking now it's that there's something wrong 😑

I'm thinking that I should have gone to my GP as soon as I had the call and asked for a CA125 blood test which is what I'm going to do tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy your Christmas and new year too and please post here once you hear your results x

Hi OP, hope you had a great Christmas and new year. Did you hear back from them with the histology results?

My ultrasound report has just come in and it's not good at all. I was supposed to have seen the consultant on 23 Dec but it's been postponed to next Monday 6th.

Please let me know your news xx

Hello. I had this. I have a history of endometriosis and adenomyosis and ovarian cysts. After a routine gynaecology appointment to monitor my above conditions a complex cyst was found on my right ovary and smaller cysts on my left. I was sent for both CT and MRI scans. I also had elevated CA125. The cyst was vascular but no evidence that it was malignant. My consultant told me that cysts of this nature if left to their own devices do tend to become malignant. It was recommended that I have a full hysterectomy. Which I have since had. Elevated CA125 can also occur with endometriosis.

I hope that everyone waiting for results gets good news and that you're treated quickly.

Hi @PureBoggin thank you for adding to the thread.
Do you mind if I ask you if you had any symptoms like pain, etc?
Glad to know you're fine now

PureBoggin · 02/01/2025 17:20

I had pain in abdomen and lower back. But unfortunately because I have had endometriosis for my entire post period life it was difficult to distinguish what the pain actually was. The wait to discover whether the consultants thought it was worth further investigation for malignancy was excruciating.

My adenomyosis was causing some minor bulging onto my ureter and one of the reasons the consultant recommended a full hysterectomy was because they had concerns that if the ureter was impacted further by the bulging it could ultimately lead to kidney problems, so it might be worth keeping an eye on the cyst that is impacting your ureter.

BetsyBobbin · 05/01/2025 15:37

Oh God, poor you. The wait period is definitely the worse.

My first scan showed teratoma, calcification, adenomyosis and a cyst that I don't recall the name now but it's understood to be benign. I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow and asking for a full hysterectomy which is what I always wanted. I'm glad you're ok now, women always suffer so much Flowers
