Hi @Happysoul2024 I'm so sorry your mum has had this experience.

Whilst ultrasound cannot definitively diagnose breast cancer, it is not unheard of that the radiologist will suggest that it's likely cancer and proceeded to take biopsies to determine the type of cancer and help put together a plan of action.

This was my experience my breast cancer was initially diagnosed at ultrasound stage and then the biopsies were taken to determine the type of cancer I had.

I'm so sorry your mum is having to go through this and you must be so upset. In a few days you will get the biopsy results and get a definitive answer.

Either way the waiting game is a really really tough time because you know something may well be wrong but you don't know what it is. You're in my thoughts. Xx

Hello there. You sound like someone who will be a brilliant support to your mum. It’s very scary at the start but once you get clarification of what’s going on and a plan, things are less scary to deal with.

Im 58 and was diagnosed with breast cancer this July. At my scan, the radiologist was able to pre warn me of what she was seeing, so once I had the formal diagnosis from my specialist and a plan, it was less of a shock. My world was in free fall for a while. I’m working through treatment and my children, in their 20s, are brilliant at supporting and also at taking my mind off things.

Wishing all the best to your mum and you, let us know how she gets on if you feel able to.

This happened to me. Was told at mammogram/ultrasound it was highly likely cancer. They also did biopsies. Sent for MRI.

then another appointment to say it was cancer but I needed more tests to see how far it spread. CT scan and two more biopsies using MRI.

then another appointment to be told it was grade 2 and referral to oncology.

it took a couple of months to get the full story. Which was frustrating and scary but at least I had the full story going into treatment.

wishing healing for your mum.

Hi @Happysoul2024 so sorry your mum and you are having a tough time... My experience as someone who's lost a friend to cancer was that that was much harder than it was when I had cancer myself...

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago and had surgery in the last week of November 2022. Like your mum I was given a heads up at my first breast clinic appointment. The radiologist had obviously spotted something she was concerned about and my specialist conveyed that to me. For me at least, the 8 days between that appointment and my biopsy results coming through gave me the chance to prepare myself for the worst. And it was not good news but I was at least half ready.

If you possibly can, just focus on today and what you can handle just for that day. And avoid scaring yourself with looking online. Most of the info may not be relevant. Not all breast cancers are the same. There will be a time for getting informed but until those results come back it is just a waiting game. I pray the breast service is as good in your mum's area as it was in mine (North Worcestershire). I was very well taken care of. 🙏
