Thyroid nodule and removal

ALS26 · 02/11/2024 09:18

I've had a thyroid nodule for a few years- over the last year it has grown 1cm to be 4cm so it's been decided to take it out. The consultant said it has no concerning features on ultrasound but I'm still worried to death about the results coming back after it's been removed and worried about the surgery itself (having half the thyroid removed)

Anyone got any similar stories to share? Feeling very in the dark and worried

Please go to the thyroid board on Health unlocked.com

You will find loads of stories of people in the same boat. The Admins there are so knowledgeable and helpful. They saved my life.

Good luck with it all. 🍀

Oh I had this done about 18 years ago. It's honestly ok. And no where near as bad as it sounds. I had a scar along the base of my throat. I used to get keloid injections afterwards to help with scarring and I used bio oil too.
Nowadays you can hardly see a thing, and hopefully they have improved even more as to how it's done. I didn't find it painful, just a little uncomfortable tbh. I hope this helps and if I can do anything to put your mind at ease please let me know Smile

I had this a number of years ago, had it for years but suddenly got big after I gave birth - was honestly fine - operation went smoothly and pain was managed well with cocodomol.

Results came back within a 3 weeks I think and they said it all looked fine except the centre which showed activity that was likely cancerous but too small to be certain. Because they took the side of the thyroid out along with the nodule there was no further treatment needed, apparently it’s one of ‘the best’ types to have as it’s so easily treatable/removable so even the worst outcome will be fine - stay grounded, wishing you all the best for your op 💐

This is similar to me - seems to have grown and grown since I had my little one just over a year ago - just terrified of it being cancerous! And the nerves I'm finding it really hard to deal with! Worry I won't be able to eat until it's over! Still waiting for a surgery date 😩😩

Thank you I just want it over - I can't stand the waiting and the not knowing what it is and the possibility of cancer

Hi @ALS26 I found your post as I'm in the same boat currently. Had half my thyroid plus some nodes removed this week, got a long wait now of 3 weeks to find out what the histology shows. My logical brain knows this is very treatable but I'm just feeling so overwhelmed and unsettled this week as I recover from the surgery

Hi there and also to original poster @ALS26
came here looking for similar stories and wonder how you’ve both got on since your ops?

I am listed for surgery next month for same thing…thyroid cyst that when aspirated has come back with some abnormal cells.

Just wondered how the op was? How is life post op with less thyroid and have you noticed any other impact on you (e.g. weight gain?). Also nervous this end so any intel would be much appreciated thanks x

Hi @BaileyHorse
I'm doing really well since my surgery, scar is not very noticeable and well healed. The outcome was that mine was not cancer, it was chronic inflammation, so better than expected news, and they were hopeful that my remaining half thyroid would function adequately. It's not doing, my TSH was raised when tested 3 months after surgery, although not high enough for me to be diagnosed with hypothyroidism. However following some hairloss and significant tiredness I requested repeat blood tests, and the level had increased again, to borderline clinical hypothyroidism (underactive). I am to be tested again in 3 months and if it hasn't improved I'm assuming I will be put on a hormone top up then.

Weight gain was my main concern but I have held it steady since the surgery (admittedly with conscious effort!).

Good luck with your surgery, stay in touch if you feel it will help 😊

Thanks @Pipsballoonfor coming back to me! So glad to hear you’re healing well. Fingers crossed the blood tests level out for you. Thanks for the offer of keeping in touch too
