Suspected Ovarian Cancer Surgery

Have been have some issues and was put on a cancer pathway after an ultrasound. Had an MRI and CT.

Doctor called and said there is something they don't like the look of so will need surgery. Wasn't in a position to ask questions as was out with DC at the time.

Waiting to find out more information about the surgery. Has anyone had surgery for this and if so what was it?

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and they also found a bit of ovarian. They take the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and cervix. I think if they'd known the ovarian cancer was there they would have taken some lymph nodes and the omentum. Depending on what they've seen they may do an abdominal hysterectomy instead of keyhole. Good luck! I found recovery fine, but it is more challenging with an abdominal hysterectomy.

Thanks for your reply. That's helpful. How are you doing now?

I'm 2.5 years after my hysterectomy, two years after chemo finished, and I'm hopefully fine! There's a cancer thread in general health that I found really supportive and knowledgeable, it includes people waiting for tests as well. A lot of women with breast cancer, but a few gynae cancers too.

JoJothegerbil · 20/10/2024 10:37

I've also had endometrial cancer. Fortunately my ovaries were fine. Laparoscopic surgery is much easier to recover from, although it's still a big op and you must take it easy afterwards. I've had everything taken out; womb, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries. I can't pretend surgical menopause has been fun and HRT isn't advised, but fortunately my cancer was found early and I'm nearly 5 years post diagnosis now.

How old are you OP? I only ask as if you are under 50, they may offer you genetic testing for Lynch Syndrome which raises the risk of bowel and some gynae cancers, including endometrial and ovarian. I found out I have it as I was 48 when diagnosed.

angelopal · 20/10/2024 10:43

45 so may get offered the genetic test.
Didn't realise HRT was not advised. Do they offer you anything else?

I was offered venlafaxine for hot flushes but that was it. I did ask for HRT as after early stage cancers, which mine was, it can sometimes be prescribed. My consultant wasn't happy to do it though, I have considered a private menopause consultant as NHS provision in my area is non existent, but not done it as yet.

I was 52 when I had a total abdominal hysterectomy last November.

A sarcoma was discovered in my womb wall and my ovaries, tubes and cervix, all covered in breast cancer cells ( I had BC 15 years ago).

Good luck 🤞

My mum recently had laparoscopic hysterectomy for ovarian cancer 1C1. They took out the tumor, her fallopian tubes and ovaries but left her womb. 4 weeks later she had surgery to do the remaining hysterectomy (poor thing never got a minute to recover)
I did have had to take her back to hospital twice because of constipation tho so please try to keep yourself clear leading up to the op or your recovery could be really hard

She went into full menopause and couldn't take HRT as she has a hormonal cancer
We have just marked the 1 year anniversary from when this all started and although it was really tough and a very long shitty recovery for her, her mental health and body are not the same anymore either, but she's here and got through it with lots of support from us and the Maggies charity

I am wishing you all the best and hope you have a good support network at home to help you xx

Enigma52 · 20/10/2024 14:58

@thistlepiedpiper I am sorry to hear of all that your mum has been through, it sounds very traumatic.

I too am not allowed HRT for the very same reason and I feel the price paid to be here, is huge.

Wishing you and your mum all the very best going forward xx

SierraSapphire · 20/10/2024 15:08

It's been much more positive for me, my memory isn't as good as it was, but physically I'm pretty fit. I have done a lot of exercise and am careful what I eat. I don't think HRT is contraindicated with all ovarian cancers though as I don't think they're hormone driven in the same way that endometrial is.

thistlepiedpiper · 20/10/2024 18:15

Aww @Enigma52 I'm so sorry you've had to go through similar. Wishing you restful sleeps, no brain fog and less hot flushes!! It is not an easy trade but definitely worth getting to keep my mum as long as possible

Love to you hun! Xx

Enigma52 · 20/10/2024 18:19

@thistlepiedpiper ah thanks 😊
Yeah a tricky trade, but I'm here and so is your mum xx

RedRosesPinkLilies · 28/10/2024 19:44

I have ovarian cancer and it is very much hormone driven. Been on letrozole and now on tamoxifen as anti oestrogen
I wouldn’t contemplate going on HRT ever again. Just by stopping HRT my cancer marker went from 1072 to about 600 in a month

Plate8 · 31/10/2024 18:53

I had total hysterectomy and both ovaries and tubes out for suspicious cyst on 1 ovary and an atypical fibroid. Is anything confirmed ? Only a pathology result as far as I know can confirm cancer.
it was open hysterectomy but I’m doing fine now and feel better than before. Good luck with your surgery.

angelopal · 31/10/2024 20:51

Got told it is a biopsy wash procedure that I am scheduled for so will know either way once the results come back. It's not for another couple of weeks yet. Just hate the waiting and not sure how will then have to wait for the results.

I am in a similar position to you OP. Went for a ultrasound on Wednesday and they've referred me for more scans ASAP. Bloods have come back clear but there's definitely something there. Wishing you luck.
