Breast Micro Calcifications

nodtik · 08/09/2024 19:59

Hello, asking for some good news stories.

Recalled from Mammogram to be told I have micro calcifications in one breast.

Had further mammogram and then several core biopsies. Left a titanium marker in my breast.

Waiting for the results.

Could be an early sign of breast cancer, which is bloody scary.

Anyone else experienced this? Anyone with any good / bad news stories?

Quietly panicking here!

I had this about 5 years ago - like you, I was terrified. I was called back for the results, to be told it's nothing to worry about. I still get invited to have mammograms at the normal intervals. Wishing you luck!

BCSurvivor · 08/09/2024 20:20

Hi @nodtik
Micro calcifications and biopsies was how my breast cancer was found in 2018, at my first routine mammogram.
There was no palpable lump as it was buried too deep.
Most of the time micro calcifications do not mean invasive cancer, but for me it meant a small tumor and two positive lymph nodes, meaning surgery, chemo and radio.
I hope you get good news, but if it is invasive, cancer treatment is much more doable than in the past, with so many medications to treat any side effects.
Sending a gentle hug and good luck for your results.

@Sagaris thank you. I hope I get the good news you did!

Thank you for taking the time to reply xx

I have a friend who had this. She’s fine. She had annual mammograms for a few years then back to normal. Good luck.

nodtik · 08/09/2024 20:39

@BCSurvivor thank you!

I know from what I have read, it is likely to be good news!

Sorry to hear yours wasn't.

It's the waiting I am struggling with. If it is bad news, I just want to know!!

I was told that calcifications are really common in women and 95 per cent turn out to be nothing.

Mine turned out to be pre cancerous cells which I had two lumpectomy's for but the pre cancerous cells were still there so ended up having to have a mastectomy in my right breast.

It was the most horrible time
Of my life waiting for the results in between each operation but even tho I ended up having a mastectomy I am so grateful it was found when it was pre cancerous.

nodtik · 08/09/2024 21:20

@greengreyblue thank you! Hoping it is good news!!

I can't give you any reassurance as I'm in the same boat and am also quietly panicking.

Had my first ever mammo and got called back for a lesion and suspicious calcifications in one boob. More mammos and then an ultrasound which showed nothing so I ended up with a biopsy and I'm now waiting for the results.

I'm usually pretty stoic but I can feel my anxiety rising daily. I hope you get your results soon and they're ok x

drivinmecrazy · 09/09/2024 11:07

Everyone's experience is different so it's not particularly helpful at this point.
The only answer you're going to get is from your biopsy results.

The thing you most need is advice to see you through while waiting.

Many people will tell you that this was their experience and ended up being nothing. You'll also have people tell you different.

The best thing I did was absolutely not to google at this time.
Sounds so easy but actually it is difficult.

But the moment I learnt the art of not googling was the moment my anxiety dropped.

For me, I had different symptoms and have recently been diagnosed, having been told by lots of people that they had the same and were fine.

The only statistic you need to know at this point is that most investigations turn out to be fine.

I understand your fear but just try not to jump hurdles that most likely don't need to be jumped.

Do you know when you will get your biopsy results 🌷

@CuckooLaLa

Oh bless you, the waiting is horrid isn't it?

When do you get your results?

Sending positive vibes! Xx

@nodtik results on Thursday (after a 10 day wait)). When's yours?

This has been hanging over me for a month because I went on holiday and had to push the biopsy back.

I feel dysfunctional, I'm not concentrating properly at work. I've had to give myself a good talking to, there are people who actually have a diagnosis and I'm stressing about a test result that could easily be benign. But the waiting is just awful.

@CuckooLaLa

Good luck for Thursday!

I have another week to wait 😬

For what it's worth, I can't concentrate either.

I hope it's good news for you xx

@nodtik thank you for the positive vibes unfortunately it wasn't good news. DCIS and it's grade 3 so I'm off to see a surgeon tomorrow.

I kind of knew from the biopsy appointment, even though they said not to worry so I was well prepared.

I'm the unlucky 1 of the 4 who gets called back, so I hope there's a free slot in the lucky 3 for you. Let me know how you get on xx

nodtik · 13/09/2024 06:22

@CuckooLaLa

Thank you for the update, I am so sorry to hear it was bad news for you.

What a shock for you, how are you feeling?

I hope because it is DCIS that it is all perfectly treatable.

Good luck with the surgeon today. Take care and look after you. I hope you are getting the support you need in real life to deal with this diagnosis xxx

CuckooLaLa · 17/09/2024 20:44

@nodtik I'm ok I guess, a bit in denial but have booked surgery and told my employer which has made it seem more real.

Have you had your results yet, I hope you've had good news and are no longer in horrible limbo just waiting x

Caliat · 18/09/2024 10:44

So sorry it wasn't good news, but I hope my story helps.

I went through this 9 years ago. My biopsy came back with grade 3 DCIS. I had a mastectomy (no reconstruction) and the post-op pathology showed a TINY bit had gone invasive. But it was so small and caught so early I avoided chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

It took a while to get used to my lop-sided body, but now it's just how I am. Having this diagnosis was a big wake up call to get fitter. I took up new hobbies, made new friends and now don't take life for granted.

You can get through this. Be patient with yourself and take it one step at a time. Best of luck x

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 26/03/2025 12:26

I've stumbled across this thread whilst in my own wait with virtually identical circumstances, although I found a lump and was referred. I've had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy and am on day 8 of the wait.
I wondered how everyone was doing ?

@nodtik - what was your outcome ? I hope you are well.
@CuckooLaLa - I hope you are doing well after your diagnosis.

CuckooLaLa · 26/03/2025 23:10

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc I'm good thank you for asking. It's been quite a ride these last few months but I'm almost through active treatment now.

The waiting for results is the absolute pits. I know people always say that but it's true.

I started out with what was thought to be DCIS but ended up having an invasive tumour growing on my chest wall. Despite that nothing was as bad as the initial wait after the biopsy.

I'm hoping to go back to work soon and start getting back to normal. To be honest though, and this will probably sound odd, I've really enjoyed the time out to just focus on myself.

When do you get your results? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 27/03/2025 13:22

Just had a phone call from the hospital asking me to go in for an appointment on Thursday.
I asked for some more information as my consultant was confident he would just call me, so it’s clearly more than just giving me a result and sending me on my way.
She said she didn’t have any information and passed me over to the Breast Care Nurses but have had to leave them a voicemail.

Here goes …

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 27/03/2025 15:02

The Breast Care Nurse has just called me back. She wouldn’t give me any information, said it had to come via the Consultant and at that appointment there would be a clear plan.

I stressed that I need to feel prepared with any questions I might have but she didn’t budge.

If this is the case, surely there can’t be a one size fits all approach. I appreciate some people don’t want to know but I cope so much better armed with information. Even if they are just possibilities. The unknown is horrendous for me 😢

BCSurvivor · 27/03/2025 22:41

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc take someone with you for the results.
As someone who's been there....recall for microcalcifications in 2018, which turned out to be an invasive tumor, 2 positive lymph nodes, chemo and radio needed, it's so easy to just focus on the word cancer and not take in much else.
Waiting is the worse time, the not knowing, the extra procedures, but once you have a plan in place and start treatment it does get easier.
I hope it's good news.
