Long story short. My BIL is currently in intensive care following a resection of a high grade (iii) glioblastoma (brain tumor). I’m not sure what the path ahead looks like for him or us as his sole care givers. He was ventilated for 10days post surgery, we haven’t had much dealings with the surgeon besides the lab results of the tumor and he is now off the ventilator but very weak and struggling with speech as well as what looks like paralysis or extreme weakness of the left side of his body.

It’s probably best to go about this on a question and answer basis. Whilst we need to come to terms with the unfolding on a day by day basis as we understand that each case is unique I would like to know about similar outcomes, paths and timelines if anyone has any experience to offer. It has already been a long road up to this point for a variety of reasons, some related to the disease and others not. We are very pragmatic and whilst we are very sad, we do need to think about quality of life etc and helping someone who perhaps already has diminished cognitive and executive functioning prior to the procedure so please don’t feel like I need a hand hold or you cant ask sensitive questions. I need some reality.

No responses here so perhaps I need to be more specific about what I would like to know. I see on the thread below mine everyone talks about death as if it is a certainty. Is this with or without a tumor resection? With or without chemo/radiation?

how much time does chemo and radiation buy a person if death is a certainty?

if my BiL has had his tumor removed (even say 95%) and he has already been living with it for 3 years does that buy him another 3 years of time before the 5% or whatever is left of the tumor starts causing problems again which prompted the removal?

he was already in a state of cognitive decline before the resection and had some weakness on his left side. Does this improve with removal?
