Can I drive if I have cancer?

I have uterine cancer, and am not sure if I can drive.

My doctor has said its fine unless I feel unwell, drowsy etc from my meds, which I don't.

The gov website and DVLA website seem quite vague on this, and state:

You do not need to tell DVLA if you have cancer, unless:

  • you develop problems with your brain or nervous system
  • your doctor says you might not be fit to drive
  • you’re restricted to certain types of vehicles or vehicles that have been adapted for you
  • your medication causes side effects which could affect your driving

I guess in theory my meds could affect my driving, but they don't. So I think I am ok to drive?

Check the information sheet that comes with the meds. Does it say that you should not drive or operate machinery whilst taking them?

Sorry to hear about the cancer.

Sounds like you're fine to drive....it's probably more common to drive with cancer than you'd think.

I am taking morphine, and the NHS website (www.nhs.uk/medicines/morphine/common-questions-about-morphine/) states:

When you first take morphine, you might feel sleepy or sick. But this side effect will wear off after a few days as your body gets used to the medicine.

You might also notice you are less alert. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery if you feel sleepy or less alert.

So I think that is all fine, I think I am going to go with it.

Seems fine to me

My husband drove with cancer for at least 18 months, until he became too ill. I imagine that virtually every cancer patient does, unless they have brain tumours or are specifically told not to.

A quick update incase anyone else has the same question+ I called the DVLA and they confirmed I am ok to drive.
