Thanks for reading and sharing your experience, advice and knowledge !
I'm 48... peri menopausal but not on HRT yet. Past year I have only had a period every 3 months. No issue as expected them to slow down.
Then this last month I've now had my period for 4 weeks with no break in between ...very unusual for me. I've not seen a doctor yet but will call on Monday. Every morning it looks as if it might stop and by lunchtime I'm back to bleeding . It's not heavy but its not spotting either. Need 2 normal tampons per day with panty liners and a pad at night.
Is this normal for peri menopause ? I'm mow worried about cancer... I don't have pain.
Please tell me what you know/have experienced and any advice ? What will likely be the next steps once docs been seen ? Tx !!

Can’t help with menopause but when I bled for weeks on end was bad anaemia and B12 deficiency. See GP.

A friend had a back ache and at one point says she'd had her period for over a month. She had cancer.
Most of my friends have been through the menopause over the last ten years and she's the only one who complained of bleeding for a very long time.

I had this....and it turned out to be my last ever period. It doesn't sound unusual for perimenopause, but hopefully a GP visit will set some tests in motion to put your mind at rest. I had an ultrasound scan (which revealed my ovaries were basically shrivelled to nothing) and a blood test, and it strongly suggested menopause was imminent. I was also given Tranexamic Acid which stopped the bleeding, and an iron supplement, because the blood loss had made me slightly anaemic.

I had a 43 day period over Christmas/January, which hot me seen by gynae quite quickly. I have a small fibroid which they think isn't problematic and it's "just" perimenopause. I was glad I had it investigated though, so hope your GP I'd similarly helpful at referring you.

ETA - it wasn't my last. Had 2 normal periods since and a lighter than normal one since.

Oh gosh... can you tell me what happened how old she was etc? This doesn't sound good...hope she's OK

You need to get checked - an ultrasound and blood tests as a minimum to be sure,
Hopefully it's nothing but continual bleeding needs investigating.
Please ensure you push your GP,

I had one for 82 days!

I had adenomyosis. Hysterectomy solved it.

Thanks ! What other tests would you recommend?

You want bloods to check iron levels in particular. The ultrasound will show fibroids etc (apparently - just different shades of grey on the screen to me!) This will probably be followed by a hysteroscopy if they want further investigations. They also took a biopsy of my womb lining.

gfedcba · 11/08/2024 10:12

It's the womb lining you are interested in - it should show up on the ultrasound.
Hopefully that is fine and yours is a fibroid,

I'm 49 and my periods seem to be gradually petering out now but I've had several horrifically long and heavy periods in the last few years, think 8 weeks was the longest one! Had blood tests and an ultrasound twice while it was all going on, nothing found and the bleeding was just put down to peri and treated with tranexamic acid which did eventually work. Obviously you need to go and get checked out OP but just wanted to reassure you that it can be 'just peri' for some people.

Thanks all !! Feel a bit better and will call tomorrow to get investigation going ....
