Is it worth going private?

I am on the 2ww for a mammogram. I have some health insurance which involves a £200 excess but that is only 2 days before my nhs appt and with the same consultant. Or I can pay privately at £400 and that is 6 days earlier but I'm not sure whether it would complicate things in terms of moving over the the nhs or over to my insurance. My main.reason is I am struggling with the worry, it's really impacting my life and I only got referred yesterday....but I've known for a couple of weeks there was an issue. Any thoughts? And how to people manage the waiting? 2 weeks feels like a lifetime right now. Thanks

I'm on the same pathway but mines a three week wait almost a month actually. I really don't think it will make any difference in the scheme of things. My partner offered to pay but I said no as it's on 9 th August now. Also same for gynie but that is actually six weeks. It's busy round here.

As to how to manage the wait, I just think nothings gonna happen in an extra month so don't sweat it.

Most cancers grow quite slowly, but I can imagine two weeks is hell. Personally I’d wait unless the money comes easy to you. It’ll sleepless nights and anxiety but doubt it’ll make much difference to the issue. I think I’d wait to go private depending what happens later.
Best wishes op.

You have an nhs appointment date for your nhs mammogram? And you are wondering whether to pay privately for a private appointment 2 days or 6 days earlier?
What does you gut tell you?

Fartooold · 26/07/2024 17:45

Personally, I would say no.
I had diagnosis and mastectomy through private health insurance, but was then referred to NHS for chemo and rads. The treatment was very disjointed, my BC nurse was back at Spirehealth, I'd never had contact with my NHS cancer consultant until halfway through chemo.
If I had to do it again, I'd do NHS all the way xx

I guess I am being driven by my worry but actually checking in with my gut is a good question......I will wait. Thanks for responding

Thanks....that's my worry so appreciate that experience. I am lucky the 2 week wait is 2.weeks around here. It's the advantage of living in a non desirable area of the country I think.

I appreciate the responses. I realise I am fortunate to have some health insurance
I am a nhs clinician (but mental health) so I know the situation of waiting lists hence the insurance. Thanks everyone

I've had nothing but excellent care from the NHS from initial appointment to mammogram to all subsequent treatment till now.

I've had consistency with my clinicians / team that I couldn't have afforded privately.

Hope all is well regardless of your decision Op.
