Head and neck 2ww

went to the gp with a sore throat, have had number of bouts of tonsillitis and Covid recently. Dr felt one of my lymph nodes was lumpy in my neck and thyroid felt enlarged. Now got an appointment at the head and neck clinic for 2 week cancer check appointment. Feeling very stressed and upset. Any experience? How likely is this to be sinister?

I hope your tests come back clear and it is just your gp being cautious.

My experience was with my son who had a brain tumour but his symptoms were very different and typical of a brain tumour - headaches, nighttime vomiting, walking like he was drunk, falling asleep unusually.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge re lymph nodes will be along.

My son has had thyroid cancer.his only real symptoms were an enlarged thyroid. Following treatment he is absolutely fine. Thyroid cancer. If that's what this is. Is extremely treatable. We were told if you have to get cancer this is the one to get

Which mode has a lump op? Can you feel the lump?

sarahc336 · 09/07/2024 17:19

Node

Dressinggowntime · 09/07/2024 18:08

It’s on my left lymph node. I can’t feel it myself. He did say he thought the enlarged thyroid was a goiter. Tbh I think I’ve always had a bit of swelling there.

If you can't feel it yourself probably just your body reacting to your illness. Cancer in lymph nodes feels hard and unmovable, like fixed in place. Most people tend to find a lump they can locate and feel. Good luck op. I know head and neck cancers are very treatable if it is

I was referred in the same way recently. I had a lump in my neck on the right side near the back, plus unexplained sweats and rib pain. The combination points to lymphoma/head and neck cancer. Went to my gp who referred me on the two week wait. My initial appointment was cancelled because the clinician was sick, rearranged for the next week so it was over 3 weeks in reality. I was examined and had an ultrasound scan on my neck. I'd also had bloods done by my gp. A few days after the appointment I had the all clear. It was just a lymph node that didn't want to go down. Hope yours is fine too.

It’s scary but try not to worry, 1) it’s very rare that it is anything malignant, I was on a 2WW referral and I’ve had an ultrasound then a fine needle biopsy on some nodules found unfortunately it came back unsure still so I am booked in for a total thyroidectomy on 23rd July just had my pre op today, it’s more my choice as they offered me partial but if it is cancer I will need the whole thing out so just took the bull by the horns and having it all out, I also have a goitre, sorry for rambling but, I am a super health anxious person and always get in a fizz however it’s all been absolutely ok so far and they have told me even if it’s cancer they find when they analyse it it’s so so treatable so try not to worry too much,

minmooch · 16/07/2024 17:19

How are you @Dressinggowntime?

I hope it goes well. There’s a bit of a family history with me for thyroid problems and thyroid cancer so I am expecting it to not be a straightforward appointment and all clear tbh

How are you @Dressinggowntime?

I’m actually feeling a lot better. It turned out I did have an infection after all and finally got some antibiotics so I’m hoping that’s why my lymph nodes were questionable. My hospital appointment is Monday so trying not to think about it too much and keep busy!

well I have my fingers crossed for you, I’m feeling actually quite calm keeping really busy as well and I am just telling myself it has to come out and best case scenario is life just cracks on with thyroxine worst case is cancer and whatever that holds but they are adamant my lymph nodes aren’t involved so hopefully it has stayed in that one place.

Lizg1991 · 29/07/2024 12:07

I hope you got on ok at your appointment, I had my
total Thyroidectomy on Tuesday, was home Wednesday evening and now just taking it easy at home, I got a pic of the removal and I’m so glad I had it done! Results in about 2 weeks and follow up on the 19th surgery took 5 hours instead of 2 but said they were happy! And I’m doing ok! Take care.

I’m glad the surgery went well. I had my appointment. They said I had nodules and cysts on my thyroid. There was one nodule they weren’t sure about so they biopsied that. Just waiting for results nervously.

Hopefully
it it won’t take long to come through for you deffo keep on it to chase as mine were floating for about 6 weeks around as I didn’t technically have a consultant, and they did come back quite quickly but all sounds good! And I’m sure they’ve said to you most of the biopsies do come back as benign, so try not to worry even though it’s hard. X

Dressinggowntime · 29/07/2024 14:30

@Lizg1991 they said 5 days but I’m skeptical about that

OP posts:
Lizg1991 · 29/07/2024 14:55

I was told 7-10days so I wouldn’t be surprised if it does come through before hand. Xx

Dressinggowntime · 09/08/2024 19:45

I just thought I’d update this as got results today and they’ve said it’s benign but they’re going to do a 6 month follow up appointment presumably to keep an eye on it.
