Ovarian cyst worries

I've had a confirmed ovarian cyst. Lots of pain, had ultrasound and they found a 5cm cyst. Blood tests clear, CA125 not elevated. Saw gynae as a follow up who did another ultrasound and she couldn't find the cyst. If it's ruptured could it still be cancerous? I'm freaking out here, how do they know for sure?

I had similar to what you describe, for 3-4 months, the pain was horrendous and they initially said it was early signs of cancer.

An ultrasound, MRI along with the cancer marker blood tests showed it wasn’t cancer.

Last ultrasound showed the cyst was no longer there.

The gynaecologist told me this is common, apparently most women have cysts, but not all experience pain and sometimes they just vanish.

Rosesanddaffs · 15/06/2024 03:37

Sorry, just to add, if it’s ruptured then it’s not cancerous, apparently a cancerous cyst has a solid form.

Don't worry, you’ve done the right thing and got it checked and you’ve got the all clear.

Serenitymummy · 15/06/2024 20:42

Thank you, I appreciate your response. I've had surgery now, it had ruptured so that's a relief. I hope you're OK now and got the all clear too.

oh that’s great news, yes all ok at the moment but it is frightening when you are going through it, the mind just goes into the darkest places xx

Serenitymummy · 18/06/2024 17:45

Hi I’m currently in the same situation. I’ve had my cyst for 6 years however it’s recently started to get bigger since I was pregnant. Gynaecologist been talking about cancer which is worrying.

Serenitymummy · 25/01/2025 19:48

So sorry you're going through this. Are you pregnant now? Hopefully gynae are looking into this asap for you?

@Kayannie123 have you had any tests/scans? X

Nothankyoucyst · 26/01/2025 17:38

Im in a similar situation. I’ve been struggling to go to the loo (both) for 6 months. Felt like pain, pulling and pressure. I had to fight for a scan as I already knew I had endo but the male GP said cysts, heavy periods and pain were completely normal.

Managed to speak with a female GP who said it is NOT normal and referred me. Anyway, had the scan and I have a large endometrioma cyst and my ovary looks pretty mangled.

I have a call with the gynaecologist tomorrow and I’m quite anxious tbh. And CA125 test also this week.

I’ve lost 5lb from not eating. I have no appetite whatsoever :(

Nothankyoucyst · 26/01/2025 17:39

Hope you’re ok @Kayannie123 💐

ParsnipPuree · 26/01/2025 18:03

I've had ovarian cysts all my life, including a 10cm dermoid which had to be removed. None were cancerous.

Kayannie123 · 26/01/2025 18:13

@ParsnipPuree thank you this has been really positive to hear! It’s just a scary situation to be in. Did they offer you the ca125 blood tests to check for cancer? I just don’t know if they just doing standard practice or if they believe it’s cancer. I’ve had my cyst for 6 years now it appears to have grown over time and especially when I got pregnant x

I had cysts on both my ovaries for much longer than 6 years but had them routinely scanned and monitored with CA25's. Have you had your cysts scanned? They can usually tell by that it's just a simple cyst or something else.

Kayannie123 · 26/01/2025 18:58

@ParsnipPuree yeah I’ve multiple scans I’ve recently had a baby too so I’ve had quite a few scans really. One gynaecologist said a few years ago it’s just a begin cyst and my recent gynaecologist says she’s unsure about it because it’s grown a lot but I always told that it was the pregnancy hormones that made it grow. I had a private scan done last night and the person that did the scan said it’s just a simple large cyst so, other people have said it’s more complex so I’ve got no idea 🤷‍♀️ the private scan was very thorough and took his time.

Serenitymummy · 26/01/2025 20:07

I think in this situation the ca125 test is pretty standard because it's good for ruling it out.

I was told after my ultrasound that they thought it might be cancer but couldn’t say for sure. They did the ovarian cancer blood tests and an MRI.

Thankfully my cyst had burst but I was told they can come back every month but as the scans/blood tests were clear it was nothing to worry about.

I had a follow up appointment and both ovaries had no cysts.

I know it’s easy to say, but please don’t worry, fingers crossed it will be good news xx

Kayannie123 · 27/01/2025 09:50

@Rosesanddaffs hi thanks for the reply it’s good to hear yours was okay. I’ve had mine for 6 years and it’s never burst but it’s got bigger since I was pregnant. They’ve told me on the scan it’s fluid filled but they said they can never rule out cancer until it’s taken out. I’ve had two types of cancer blood tests both have came back clear, but they have never offered a mri they have just left me now on a long waiting list to have it out x

Doesn't sound like anything to worry about then at the moment but you will need scanning every six months to check there are no changes.

Kayannie123 · 27/01/2025 15:03

@ParsnipPuree hi I’m on the waiting list now to have it taken out so I won’t have to keep going back and fourth all the time x

ParsnipPuree · 27/01/2025 15:19

100% right decision. Makes me wonder as I kept having to pay for private scans and consultations but they never once said take them out! (I had cysts on both ovaries). Im cynical but they probably make more money that way than whipping it out once and for all.

Kayannie123 · 27/01/2025 15:40

@ParsnipPuree they have always gave me the choice to leave it in or take it out, I’ve always left it in the past but since this last gynaecologist has scared me with cancer I’m definitely having out now, it’s a 12 month waiting list though. Has anyone asked you if you wanted yours out? Mines big now x

ParsnipPuree · 27/01/2025 16:18

I had a trans vaginal scan which showed changes to the consistency of the cyst and as I'm unable to have MRI scans, i decided to have a total hysterectomy. I was also haemorrhaging badly. They found no cancer on biopsy but it saves me worrying in the future and I was past menopause anyway.

4seasons · 28/01/2025 21:55

I’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer . I’m on the 2 week pathway and have had ultra sounds and seen a Gynae consultant. I have an MRI in a days time and a CT scan to guide a needle biopsy as I have ascites. Over the last few days I have had a sort of “ stitch “
pain in my left side ( the side with the largest cancerous growth ). I am now worried that the cancer is spreading to other organs. But what shall I do ? My GP has been pretty useless so far … UTI , diverticulitis, IBS etc. Who do I tell about this new pain ? Is it significant? Do I wait until my next Gynae appt ? I am frantic with worry. Can anyone help with advice ?

Kayannie123 · 29/01/2025 01:45

@4seasons im so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope that you get the treatment you need quickly and successfully! I would advise that you call your gynaecology department at hospital and tell them your new symptom and express your concerns ask to have another appointment to speak to a consultant they maybe will do more tests! Maybe the pain is just coming from the original tumour rather than it speaking to else where! Yes gps can be pretty useless at times! Xx
