Breast Clinic, what to expect?

Hi,
a few weeks ago I found a lump, I kept an eye on it as I know your breasts can change during your cycle, after a full cycle and no change I saw the gp yesterday morning and I have been referred on the 2 week wait.
Amazingly I have an appointment for 9am Friday morning, however I’m not quite sure what to expect. I don’t know anyone who has been to the breast clinic before so don’t have anyone to ask what to expect.
Ive been told to allow for 3 hours for the appointment.
i don’t have anyone to go with me due to short notice. Gp mentioned a mammogram but what I have seen online suggests only being 34 I may not get one and it could be an ultrasound instead.
would I get any kind of results on the day, or is it just tests and the results to follow?
any info would be amazing, so I get an idea of what to expect. I feel it’s all happening very fast!
thanks

In my experience the breast clinics are fantastic. Lumps are more common than you would expect (and often harmless).
It’s normal to be seen very quickly, you might have an examination, ultrasound/mamogram or a sample of the lump taken for testing. They might drain the lump if it’s a cyst.
I haven’t had results back straight away before, but you will get results within a week or two. Try and take someone with you to the appointment for your results if you can. Good luck!

I had an examination with a consultant who then referred me to an ultrasound (same hospital, on the same day) in a specific breast clinic area. In my case they decided it was mastitis, so I was given the all clear there and then (and a prescription for antibiotics). Very efficient to get the appointment but a lot of moving between departments and waiting around on the day, so take a book/something to pass the time.

I hope it turns out to be nothing for you.

I had an abnormal mammogram.
Recalled and had second mammogram and ultrasound.
Inconclusive so sent for an mri scan the following week. That is painless but uncomfortable as have to lie on your front for 15 minutes without moving.
Inconclusive so sent for a biopsy the following week - again painless as they use a local anaesthetic but uncomfortable lying facedown on a bed where your breasts go through a hole so the doctor can reach them.
Final results - all clear.
So took a few weeks because they were so thorough.
Good luck.

You will see a consultant who will examine you. Then they’ll do a mammogram, followed by an ultra sound. The radiographer will give you a good idea of anything is amiss. But they will call you back for formal results on another day. If they find anything, and you’re close to London, ask for 2nd opinion referral to The Royal Marsden, they’re the best.

Hi, i recently found a lump and I was admitted on the 2 week pathway too.
I was in & out within 1 hour 20 mins, I was amazed at how great the service was.
I'm 42, and I had a physical examination first, then a mammogram then an ultrasound. The Dr told me there and then in the ultrasound room that it was normal breast tissue.
I then waited around 10 minutes and had a final consultation and was told I'd be getting discharged as all was well.
If they aren't sure what it is from doing the mammogram and ultrasound they take a biopsy there & then, but you have to wait a few weeks or so for the results.
9/10 referrals aren't cancer, so stats are good.
Hope you get to relax a little before Friday Smile

I had a manual examination, confirmed a lump; then a mammogram which was inconclusive

Then sent for ultrasound, which found a mass deep in tissue so they did a biopsy

Was a papilloma (I had no idea what this was, but possible pre-cancerous growth)

Had an op to remove about 3 weeks later, done via wire guided biopsy

They are very thorough and were lovely
Good luck

Thank you so much ladies, that’s all so reassuring, just to get an idea of what to expect. Due to the short notice I don’t have anyone who can come with me, my husband cannot get cover for work, and my best friend works as a teacher.
i have felt like I’ve been dealing with it well, as there is no point panicking or worrying until there is something to worry about, but where I have obviously done some googling, i now have adverts for head coverings coming up so I think that has unnerved me a bit.
I know odds are in my favour as 90% are benign.
thanks again ladies

Good luck, I've just gone through this. They'll do a mammogram followed by an ultrasound, if it's suspicious they'll do a biopsy during the ultrasound which is performed with a local anaesthetic.
You'll have a good idea during it all if it's anything to worry about or if you're in the clear x

How did it ho? @SFHJ

weegiemum · 12/05/2024 16:29

How did you get on?

I had this towards the end of last year, had a lump and was referred under the 2week pathway.

Had an examination by the doctor, then mammogram (of both breasts), and the lump was very clear. On ultrasound it looked like a cyst but wouldn't drain so they took a biopsy.

I then entered a period of 2 week waits - 2 to see the surgeon, then 2 to have another biopsy, then another 2 to see the surgeon who recommended a lumpectomy, then another 2 to get my pre-op assessment, then 2 to the operation, then 2 to see the surgeon again to find out it was a little tiny cancerous lump that they were sure they'd got all of it.

Oncologist (who I didn't like!) recommended 10 days of radiotherapy which was awful and I was tired for weeks, but luckily didn't need chemo. I'm now recovering really well 3 months after my radio ended and will be seen again in December for a repeat mammogram.

I hope it goes well with you and that you get good answers to your questions xx
