Hopefully you can get the community palliative care team in for symptom management and support if he wants to die at home. They will be able to advise on symptom control for pain and breathlessness. Sorry you are going through this. Has any palliative chemo been offered?

Flyhigher · 04/02/2024 02:53

No treatment offered we are in a small town in Spain

Sorry OP. My grandad died from this aged 80.

He died at home, kept comfortable with some morphine and the doctor checking on him throughout the day. Is that a possibility?

Flyhigher · 04/02/2024 06:40

Keira can you tell me more?

Sorry you are going through this, OP. My 95-year-old Grandad was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in November. He is having his lungs drained of fluid every couple of weeks, and that seems to be keeping him quite comfortable at the moment. Not having any active treatment. He's still going out for lunch and making my daughters laugh! It's hard to know what to expect really.

My father died from lung cancer in hospital, but he was very comfortable just with oxygen as needed, and some morphine which was a liquid for him to drink. I was helping the nurse to change his pyjama pants, and I asked him which ones he wanted - he just laid his head on the pillow and took his last breath.

I'd suggest asking his doctor what services are available to you , and take whatever help you can get. Best wishes.

My dad died of small cell lung cancer. He ended up dying in hospital because he was admitted with an infection and never got strong enough to be discharged. Wasn't in pain and remained lucid until the end (his biggest fear was that it would go to his brain). He just got more and more tired and eventually he lost consciousness. After that it took around 8 hours for his heart to stop beating.

Is your dad currently at home?

Flyhigher · 05/02/2024 06:48

Yes he's at home. Said he wanted to go to hospital

In the uk there are charities that provide nursing and emotionally support for parents and residents. The palliative care team usually are involved plus the community care team. Is there anyone like this in Spain?

Flyhigher · 05/02/2024 19:48

Looks like it yes.

I totally empathise with what you are going through.

My dad has recently been diagnosed with it. It’s inoperable and at the moment he has fluid on the lungs. It’s been drained once and it’s come back.

Not sure what the future will hold but I’m here if you want to talk.

Flyhigher · 23/02/2024 16:50

They dosed him up with morphine and he went quickly. Peacefully.
