Immediate results of colonoscopy?

I had been told results were discussed immediately after so no waiting around. I have been working to that assumption. Having read around however that seems unlikely - unless nothing at all is found. Obviously that is what I’m hoping for but disappointing that I won’t definitely know the outcome. Have put things on hold and now it could be weeks longer.

I wonder how much info people were given immediately after colonoscopy?

Hello, I don’t know how helpful this is but I was told I had a cancerous tumour in my colon straight after my colonoscopy. I did have it done privately though as it was during Covid, I was in agony & the wait on the NHS was too long. But I would think if there was anything concerning they’d tell you sooner rather than later.

I had a colonoscopy on the NHS and was told immediately that a 3mm polyp had been removed. It then needed to be looked at by histology and I was told just two days later that it was pre-cancerous. It was all very speedy and efficient.

My mum was told she had a cancerous tumour immediately after the colonoscopy (luckily all treated now). This was NHS

Instantaneous. The endoscopist kept running commentary on what was discovered in all three of the colonoscopies I've had. One pre-cancerous polyp that was sent for histology - she said 'That one looks a bit iffy and we'll follow it up but I've excised it and don't have any real concerns.' Other polyps she said she saw no reason to be concerned about, although all were analysed.

They debrief immediately after. With photos

I got the all clear immediately

I was told immediately that I had a tumour and would require an operation. The basics of the operation were explained to me then and there. Fantastic doctor by the way.

I asked if the tumour would definitely be cancerous and he said yes, it would be. I really appreciated him being so straightforward. No unnecessary uncertainty or false hope.

I’m sorry some of you had difficult results but it is really helpful to know everyone had quick results. I have been quite focused on “knowing” after colonoscopy and thrown a bit to realise I might not know this week.
Thanks for the answers.

I think I was told straight away that it was clear. To be honest I was so focused on the ham sandwich and cup of tea they gave me the rest is a blur. After all that fasting it was the most wonderful meal I've ever had.

Good luck hope it goes well.

You should get a debrief before you go home. Try to have someone else with you in case you forget what was said. But you should also get a copy of the report.

Redglitter · 09/01/2024 21:34

I was told my results but the doctor who did the procedure then once I'd had my tea & toast and was a bit more with it a nurse went over them again

ragdoll12345 · 09/01/2024 21:34

Was told what they were seeing during the procedure then had a debrief before going home

Beandoodle · 09/01/2024 21:38

If they can be sure of what they have seen they can feed back, if biopsies need to be sent then they will have to wait for the histology to come back to confirm a diagnosis.

stayathomer · 09/01/2024 21:40

got photos and they sent something off for a biopsy. I was in a daze and didn’t ask enough questions

Seems I have misunderstood and most are given immediate feedback. Good to know thanks.
