Grandad just diagnosed with bone cancer

My grandad has just been diagnosed with bone cancer, he's 80.
Long story short, he had radiotherapy some years ago for prostate cancer and that cleared up, he's now had a pain in his hip for a few months and an X-ray showed a shadow. Today he saw the oncologist that diagnosed him with bone cancer. They can't do anything to help but he's having one shot of radiotherapy.
He didn't want to know how long he has so none of us know how bad it could be, but I was wondering if anyone has any similar experiences and if they could share their stories with me.

This kind of thing really frightens me, I'm really scared about seeing him frail and unwell when it comes to the end as he's always been happy and full of energy. My other set of grandparents died a few years ago now, not from cancer but they were both in hospital before they died and I found myself avoiding going to visit them as I was scared to see them unwell and just not the same as I knew them to be all those years.

So sorry to hear that op.

Unfortunately I don't think he will have long.

In my experience it's usually a short time between diagnosis and the end with this type of cancer. We had a close friend who fell at 75 and her leg shattered. Turned out she had bone cancer and it was all very quick after that. Better for her as she had always been very active and busy.

Bone cancer patient here. This completely depends on the type of bone cancer - there are lots of sub types. Mine is a chondrosarcoma that only grows 1-2mm a year, while osteosarcoma tends to be more aggressive.
You need more information.
Best of luck for your grandpa.

Has he really been diagnosed with primary bone cancer- which is actually rare- or spread of his prostate cancer to his bones, which is very common?

Treatment and prognosis is vert different depending on what he has?

Hi, palliative care nurse specialist here.
I wonder if this is secondary cancer from his prostate cancer as this is common.
His prognosis depends on many things so no one will be able to tell you here.
Bone cancer can be managed for a time but his treatment plan will depend on how well he is etc.
The biggest issue with bone cancer can be pain so it's good he's had radiotherapy to it.
If needed I would suggest that he is referred to his local community palliative care team who can offer him support and advice with pain and any other issues.

So very sorry to hear this. My grandfather died of bone cancer, having had prostate cancer. I don't think it is uncommon.

He was relatively ok until the end, but he had pain management specialists to help so he could stay at home until the end without being in too much pain, but it did take a while to get the dosages right.

Cherish the time you have with your lovely grandfather. 💐 Sending strength and courage to him and your family.

Thank you for all of your replies and lovely comments, I am going to see him on Sunday so I'm sure we will find out more then.
