Inflatable mattress, topped with two Fat Airics, fitted sheet over, fluffy duvet and proper pillows. Bliss, I tell you, bliss!

Oh, also added a dustpan and blush to my essentials list. Which is odd, since I can never be bothered to have a clean and tidy home...

That sounds like camping heaven. I feel you should take an enamel mug. If a slight chip on one side, even better. Yes, yes, your coffee will be either cold or you'll burn your lips, but that's a small price to pay, surely?!

Just checked out Huttopia and found fab looking site near Versailles which I thought would be great for a weeks holiday in September but at the prices - the wooden huts are 123 euros a night! Maybe I am being a meany skinflint or I am just used to camping prices now but I really think that is a lot, over £700 for a week in a big shed!

The Huttopia sites have campsites where you pitch your own, these are quite reasonably priced, similar to other sites we go to in France. About 30E a night for 5 in high season.

i agree why pay for a posh shed when you can take your own tent?... but we are long term campers and we like tents. I think the yurts and wooden chalets appeal to people who aren't really campers at heart. or people with a partner who hates camping.

Fennel, please post a review after your stay there, I'd love to hear how it was.

Re yurts etc - I have to say even though I love our tent, I've stayed in yurts before when I wanted the "outdoors" feeling, but without the schlepp of packing the car, pitching tent, etc etc. I don't think I'd stay in a yurt for long, but think it can be pretty relaxing, although expensive obviously, for a short break.

Its just too far for us to drive all that way from Scotland (especially with a toddler in the car who gets bored driving the 1.5 miles to her nursery) so that's why I looked at the huts, but the cost of the hut plus flights and car hire is just way too much. I really wanted to 'camp' and do the 'outdoorsy' thing but without the massive long drive. We are looking at Eurocamp now...

We were planning to camp in the far north of Scotland (Achmelvich, near Lochinver) this summer. But we couldn't face the 16 hr drive from our southerly part of the UK, France means far less driving. So we binned the Scotland idea, yet again. though Achmelvich is DP's favourite ever campsite.

yurts do look very nice and easy.

MisSalLaneous · 12/07/2010 10:29

We stayed at a place just outside Rye earlier this year, where you had two yurts - one to sleep in, other for hanging around / extra sleeping. Was fab as it was so private, so ds could make as much noise as he wanted without me worrying that we're disturbing others.

We've got the same problem as you wrt Scotland - absolutely love it, but it's just too far for regular visit (SE is our easiest option).

Will check out Achmelvich as obviously much closer for us.

I have also decided that since I am too mean to pay Gossypium to make me a picnic blanket that I should make my own. I have managed to get hold of 9 kind of matching tea towels and I am using an old fleece blanket as wadding, nearly half way through sewing it and quite pleased so far....

MisSalLaneous · 14/07/2010 20:52

Hey wiggle, please post a pic to your profile when you're done with it!

I've decided that I'm going to stay in a yurt again this winter, those wood burners make the yurt so cosy.

Will do, I have the hand sewing bit to do tonight, which I actually prefer to the machine sewing.

Off to look at cosy yurts with woodburners first...
