What baby monitor is good for camping?

I am about to go camping for the first time with my 6 month old little girl. She has just started to sleep through but doesn't do it reliably. We're going with about 30 friends so I would really like to avoid going to bed at 8:30pm with her! Has anybody got any recommendations for a babymonitor that can operate on batteries (tho we will have access to mains to charge during the day), has a long range, and has flashy lights to alert when the little darling pipes up? Thx!

you don't need a baby monitor. just stay near the tent. chance are she won't want to go bed at 8.30 either.

You will be able to hear her if you are not far from your tent. The "walls" are like paper.

Agree with everyone else. There's no chance you won't hear her if you're sat outside your tent.

I'm not so sure. We've booked out the whole campsite so we have it to ourselves and it will be well noisy - music, dancing, plenty of other wailing babies! I would like to be able to go to the big communal tent at night if poss.

I personally wouldn't go so far from the tent even if you have booked the whole site.

I'm not a particularly alarmist type of parent but being out of earshot and presumably sight of your tent with a lot of other people, albeit friends, milling about doesn't seem like the wisest decision to me.

The whole abduction issue aside, what if the tent caught fire - not impossible if there's people wandering about smoking - have a look on youtube for footage of tents burning, they go unbelievably quickly.

LilRedWG · 27/06/2010 21:56

I would not go out of earshot myself, as others say the fire risks alone from a casually tossed cigarette, whilst tiny, are just not worth it.

If it's going to be that noisy is she realisitically going to be asleep anyway? We've just found that DD stays up with us if there's a lot going on and has done since very young.

Can you not leave her at home with someone else if it's going to be a big party holiday, she and you will probably get more out of the weekend that way.

Or, let her fall asleep in her pram in the communal tent and put her into bed when you go back to the tent?

Given that tents have zero sound insulation, the noise level for her won't be any different in your tent or in the communal tent. But she will be vastly safer.

Excellent idea.

i'm putting my money down and saying that there is not a cat in hell's chance she'll go down at the normal time.

I recommend some kids ear defenders and a buggy with a good sleeping bag and blankets or a nice cozy mei tei sling inside a big fleece worn by you or DP - we did a couple of festivals with our 6mo like that and it worked a dream. She did not go down in the tent on her own, oh no. She had a FAB time though - have fun!!
