Cotswold View

Off here this weekend for our first trip with DS 3 and DD1. Being novices I'm thinking we'll concentrate on the basics such as putting up the tent so that it doesn't collapse on us/ keeping everyone warm so am not planning on cooking etc.

Can anyone who has stayed here before tell me if there are any child friendly pubs in the area - ideally in walking distance.

Also any other top tips - am excited and apprehensive in equal measure!

No way! I'm off to Cotswold View this weekend too! Also not been there before, so will look out for answers to your questions. I'm a novice too, although dh isn't, and neither are PIL, who are coming too. Hopefully keeping warm won't be too much of a problem, as I think the weather's supposed to be good. Not sure about pubs, but Blenheim Palace and the Cotswold Wildlife Park nearby are definitely worth a visit.

How exciting - I wonder if we'll spend the whole weekend wondering if that's the other Mnetter?!

I am obsessively checking the forecast but fingers crossed it does look good. Was cold at home this weekend so that didn't help my nerves about camping!

Cotswold Willdlife park is definitely on the agenda.

Enjoy!

Umm, we stayed there last year (or was it year before...)

We didn't venture off the site in the evening, but believe there is a pub in the nearby village which is a short walk down the hill.

The shop sells bottles of wine and stuff so we were sorted .

It is a lovely site, hope you have a lovely weekend. We can't really seriously plan to camp until August as DS3 is only 3 weeks old!

StanHouseMuir · 21/06/2010 23:49

There's a few pubs in Charlbury (nearest village), although not sure how child-friendly they are. There's also a co-op too.

Things to do: Blenheim, Woodstock, Trip into Oxford for the museums, Cotswold Wildlife park. Burford (Cotswold village on a hill).

bumpybecky · 22/06/2010 00:01

we've stayed there before several times

never walked as far as the nerest pub though so I'm of no use at all!

emilyprentiss · 22/06/2010 09:31

yes, we stayed there last year in a Pod. It was a very well organised site with the cleanest toilet / shower block I've ever known. The week we were there, the weather was truly appalling and the tent field was really muddy, but they had cleaners going round at 10pm mopping floors.

Not a huge amount to do on site but several things in the area as other people have said. The Cotswold Farm Park is also worth a visit.

No idea about pubs though, sorry.

The pods look great - am wondering if we should've booked one of those to ease us in gently!

No don't go it's horrid, horrid, horrid! Only 40mins from us and I don't want it to get too busy, it's fab really. We tend to go there once a year. This year we went in Easter with our caravan. We went to a quite posh pub for sunday lunch about a mile or two away in Enstone I think, The Crown, the campsite recommended it.

Soups · 22/06/2010 22:41

We walked into the local town and didn't see any that screamed out child friendly. We did drive to one pub called The Harrow, I think in Enstone, it looked great with a beer garden and play area. This was last year but the service was awful, I'd comment on the food but it didn't turn up. Their attitude stunk about the situation. The food didn't look nice when it turned up to other customers, their faces weren't glowing.

Flutterbye · 22/06/2010 23:09

The two play areas, toddler cars, the on-site animals, football area and wooded walk area was fabulous for our kids (4 & 6). Each time we have gone it's hard to get our little girl off the roundabout, the best one she's come across apparently!

emilyprentiss · 23/06/2010 14:04

the pods were fantastic, especially given how much it rained! Very warm too, ended up kicking the sleeping bag off. The only thing I'd criticise is that although they'll sleep 4 comfortably, they are just one space, so not a lot of room to sit inside if you need to (e.g. during torrential rain!)

LadyThompson · 23/06/2010 14:21

I live very near here In fact, Soups, we are just renovating a cottage in Enstone, and The Harrow has closed. The Crown is quite nice, but vvv busy on a Sunday and you deffo need to book. I would recommend The Falkland Arms in Great Tew - it is thatched and utterly beautiful, with walks nearby and a large beer garden (no kids facilities as such but at least they can run around and no one will mind.)

In Charlers, the three pubs are all adjacent to each other - there's The Rose & Crown (very small real ales type pub), The Bull (quite nice for food but no beer garden) and The Bell, which DOES have a beer garden and, again, the food is nice but not really posh.

Oh - and the Co-Op is not where the other shops are - if on foot, you need to cut through behind the Bull and walk up. If you get stuck and need to ask someone, it's near the doctor's surgery.

Woodstock is nice for antiquey shops, Burford is indeed pretty cute (recommend Huffkins for tea and cakes or lunch), and not far from the Cotswold Wildlife Pk if you wanted to combine the two.

Have fun!
