This afternoon!

We have a tent!
We have sleeping bags!!
We have 5 torches/lights!!!
We have a cool box and loads of camping plates/cutlery etc from extensive picnicking!

We think we need:

A stove (poss including grill?)
Sleeping mats
Mallet (didn't come with tent)
Maybe a central type light (thouh main camping is to be in Scotland in June/July so it doesn't get dark till 11pm)

What have we missed????

Quick please!!!

You can never have too many lights!

EARPLUGS! Earplugs and eye masks.

You want to take our portable BBQ? I can get it to you if so. I recommend the self-igniting coals.

You can borrow our one-burner grill, too. It's a brightspark.

Lotsa matches.

I have a 'Buff', this sort of do-rag that makes into a bunch of things - hat, scarve, neck gaiter, etc. - that I use to cover up my nasty, greying greasy hair on campouts. It's especially handy for cold faces at night.

Some line and clothes pegs and some Ecover or Dr Bronner's Castille soap - you can use that for EVERYTHING, including bodies and dishes.

Firelighter. Even with rings and good kindling, there's nothing like a good fire.

If you have a dryer, collect the fluff from it.

Collect cardboard egg cartons, too.

Stick fluff in egg cups in cartons.

Melt old candles over bain maries. Pour over fluff.

Stick under kindling. I promise you, that mo' fo' will go up in flames even in the worst of weathers.

An afterburner/candlelighter thingie. One of the ones you can refill.

It will work even in the wind.

Babywipes. A whole back.

If you feel those are unethical, not very green, then make you own from recylced kitchen roll or old cut up muslins.

Brew you a solution of chamomile tea. Like a whole teapot worth.

Put in an old, clean milk jug with a few drops of Dr Bronner's or Johnson's baby shampoo and a few drops of baby or jojoba oil.

Use this to soak your clothes/towels.

Put these all in some sort of tub.

Use them to clean your face and body when you fancy it.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2010 00:50

A great old bowl. A thousand different uses for this thing. To wash up, to clean dirty clothes, to fill with water and horse bathe yourself.

A deck of cards. A pair of dice.

Poetry. I'm not kidding. A book of poetry. More mileage than a book because you can play games memorising it.

One of my prized possessions is my friend Rich's Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass', tea-stained and dog-eared.

If you go for a book than make it a tome you'd not read anywhere else.

I'll never forget meeting Rich because I brought up going to Starbuck's and he quipped, 'Call me Ishmael.'

A whole roll of silver duct tape.

'If you can duck it, fuck it.'

A needle and thread and waxed dental floss or fishing line - stronger than traditional thread, both easier to thread into the needle.

A good pocket knife.

Plenty of sugar. 'the panacea for all ills' when thrown into your tea or coffee.

Ineed2 · 10/06/2010 17:04

Ikea bags/folding crates. Easier for the kids to carry the washing up to the sinks!! LOL.
Seriously though, ikea bags are brilliant for keeping c..p off the tent floor and for throwing the last few bits in when you are packing up. I never camp without at least 2.

PandaG · 10/06/2010 17:14

wine

folding table - pref metal - so you can cook on it - will save your back

gas lighter 'clicker' easier than fumbling about with matches

all the pipes and connectors to connect your stove up to the gas - if gas bottle one rather than click in canister one.

shipsladyg · 10/06/2010 17:21

string and pegs for drying line.

geordieminx · 10/06/2010 18:58

Weegie - did you go to Go outdoors? We were there at the weekend (and today).

We havent even got a tent yet but are close!

Expat - your lists are great!

Wiggletastic · 11/06/2010 20:31

Wind-up radio to listen to comedy on Radio 4 of an evening.

Duvet, pillows and sheet - nasty slippy-slidy sleeping bags are ok for kids but the novelty wears off much quicker for grown-ups.

Bottle-opener - NEVER forget this.

Hope you all have a fab time. We will probably bump into you guys on some midgie infested lochside at some point. We will be the ones with the red wine (doesn't need chilled )
