The solar shower was the best bit of kit last week.

It has been living under the boot of the car inside the spare tyre since godknows how long. An at the time random purchase along with spare guys and some pegs.

OMG what a godsend it was this week.

The site we stayed at was utterly perfect in every way apart from the sodding showers, which despite being immaculate and huge only produced a child's wee trickle of alternating freezing or scalding water for 20p which then cut out leaving you covered in soap with two moaning and equally soapy children after only a minute

grr

So out came the solar shower (basically large thick plasic bag with black on one side) plus tube, tiny water sprinkly end and tap wotsit.

Filled it up in the morning and left it black side up outside.

came back from beach and behind the tent showered and washed hair of both the dds (stood in trug) then I went into the utility tent and washed my hair and had a very decent strip wash with the rest of the warm water.

and all for FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Granted it wouldn't work so well if it was cloudy but still...

was v pleased with it.

Thanks That is fab idea!

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2010 15:05

It's the thinnest lightest thing ever so doesn't add to car packing stress.

Obviously go don't get a power shower with it but actually there was considerably less wailing and carrying on from the dds with the gentle watering can effect. They also thought it was v exciting to be having a shower nude outdoors.

thanks for the tip!

poppyboo · 05/06/2010 15:07

my two girls (2 and 5 ) are actually scared of showers so this is ideal!

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2010 15:10

poppy, mine are the same. I loathe taking them to the showers but with this it was fun (until dd1 fell out of trug and into some nettles, but that wasn't the showers fault).

I stood them in the trug so the grass didn't get all wet and soapy.

Glad you had a good time slubber.

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2010 16:28

Slubber - you were right about the weather!

We're just back from Anglesey today and it was red hot all week (apart from Tuesday)

So I'm definately going to employ your theory of positive thinking in future!

(and I got the opportunity to see our prospective campsite in August - now v excited).

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2010 16:52

I TOLD you

We had a bit of a grey drizzly start on tuesday but apart from that fabuloso weather.

Where are you going in Aug then? (or are you going back to the same site?)

No we were in a beautiful apartment in Benllech this week.

In August we are off to Tyddn Asaf. Although I was looking at Home Farm (which I'm sure I read that you are a big fan of) - so I'm keeping that up my sleeve for next time.

DH refuses to have anything to do with camping so I shall be Action Woman with DS1(6) and DS2(4).

Went in Aldi today and their special offer tomorrow is an electric coolbox for £34.99 so I'm toying with buying one....

lostinwales · 05/06/2010 16:59

Glad I've seen this as we've just got back from camping and our drinking water was so warm when we got back from the beach I used it to clean the kids. Can I ask how you suspend it, or do I need to find a strapping young man to hold it up for me?

And Slubberdegullion I too am mis at the prospect of being home, I should be swimming in the sea now before a wash and a glass of wine with my BBQ, and an evening toasting marshmallows with my boys. Instead I'm at home with constant rowing boys over the computer and telly. Grrr

lostinwales · 05/06/2010 17:02

Electric cool box eh? I was just pondering how to stop wating so much food when it's hot.

Although now I'm thinking how daft I am, not sure how I'd power it in my tent

notwavingjustironing · 05/06/2010 17:03

It has a connection to the cigarette lighter in your car too, so you could charge it up that way!

lostinwales · 05/06/2010 17:12

Ooh brilliant, I wonder if our Aldi is open on a Sunday. Thank you.

Lucycat · 05/06/2010 17:16

notwavingjustironing - we've been to Tyddyn Isaf a few times - very slopey, as you'd expect for a coastal site - do pitch at the top of the hill if you can, you get the best views there too. The footpath down to the beach is lovely and if you want to use your mobile phone you'll have to go to the top of the children's playground as it's the only place we could get any reception.

I've eaten too amny Dorset cream teas although we did have to walk across the rolling hills to get to the farm so the pint in the pub on the way beach was justified.

notwavingjustironing · 05/06/2010 17:26

Hi Lucycat - yes I was a bit horrified by some of the slopes and yes I did climb up the helter skelter slide to get reception .

I have eaten so many bacon sandwiches this week, DS2 asked me if I had a baby in my tummy!

Time to re-start the running me-thinks

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2010 20:25

lostinwales, for the dds I got dh to hold the bag aloft whilst I did the watering.

For my own hairwashing there is a cunning hook in the middle of my utility tent that I hung the bag from. For 2nd rinse I suprised myself with my limberness by semi standing on my head, with head in trug full of the remaining water.

Not elegant and yet suprisingly efficient.

I had the door of the utility zipped up so no one saw.
