What's it like? Will be keycamping in the Vendee but want to stop off here on the way back for a few days.

Thanks

Yes!

We went last year and are returning this year! There is a big lake (some pitches overlooking the lake - very picturesque and quiet, I should think). There is a great adventure course and 3 zip-wires over the lake, and you can hire pedalos and swim in the water if you want to!

There is a sizeable shop, a take-away (I remember some nice pizza!) and a restaurant. There are table tennis tables in a covered area, a skateboard park and tennis courts, a mini playground for toddlers, bike hire and pony rides in the evenings.

It was busy, but not noisy.

Feel free to ask anything else!

Ooh lovely - thank you for the quick response! sounds great - will be with dd who will be 5 so it sounds like there is lots to do on site.

Is there much to do locally? What would you recommend?

We'll be going at the beginning of the school holidays - what about you?

The local town is nice and has a good market - we take our bikes so I rode up there with DD and we had a mooch around. We did a few other rides too, the Loire is great for cycling as it is flat (!) and has lots of signposted routes.

We also went off somewhere (not very far, can't remember the name of the place, but reception gave us the details!) to do kayaking which was fab. You would be able to go in one as a family and it was very safe.

We had a day in Tours, which is quite a nice city.

In previous years we have stayed on other sites in different parts of the Loire and there are lots of good chateaux to visit. Cheverny had a TinTin exhibition when we went (both DC are fans!), another had a huge leaning!) pagoda in the garden that you can go up, another hosts a big gardens exhibition with loads of interactive stuff for children.... I will see if I can find the names of them!

We also have done quite a bit of wine tasting in the region - there are lots of "caves" and vineyards you can visit

We are going in earlyish August (after 10 days in Brittany). It was very hot last year, hope it's just as nice this summer! Where are you going in the Vendee? We have been there too!

Also have you heard of Puy du Fou - it is sort of between Vendee and Loire and is absolutely fantastic - a re-enactment theme park.

We went to Futuroscope last year - a sort of collection of 3D and 360degree cinemas and some rides. DH and the DC enjoyed it more than me!

Ooh - lovely - thank you.

We won't be taking bikes as don't have the space to take them - will look into hiring them though.

We're back off to St Jean - have been in that area for a few years now but thought about stopping off in the Loire on the way back to break the journey. Looking forward to wine tasting

We hadn't done Puy de Fou as dd was too young I think - she'll be five this year so may give it a go. Do you think she'd be too young for Futuroschope?

I think ours were 4 and 6 when we went to Puy du Fou and they loved it. She would be old enough for Futuroscope, infact the rides they have are under 10 or 12's really. Definitely take swimmers / change of clothing as there are some water play things.

We went to St Giles Croix de Vie in the Vendee - lovely little town with the most fantastic ice-cream shop on the main drag - huuuuuge ice-creams and a million flavours to chooose from!

DrSpechemin · 27/05/2010 09:34

I think we'll definitely try and go to Puy du Fou then.

Just trying to work out journey times now. We'll be travelling back to Calais. I don't suppose you went that way and can remember how long it took you?

BigTillyMint · 29/05/2010 19:16

I think it must have been about 5 hours - by the time we get packed up it would be 11ish and then we went to Cite Europe before we got to the tunnel. Don't quote me on that, though!

DrSpechemin · 30/05/2010 21:48

Excellent - 5 hours sounds v good. Far more preferable than the journey to the Vendee

Yes!
We've been to the water park near Vouray with our friends and all the DC loved it!

And Puy du Fou was very hot when we went too

DrSpechemin · 31/05/2010 10:03

I'm thinking about going to Puy du Fou on the way to the Loire to combine the travel.

I've looked at the tickets for Puy du Fou and it seems that you buy a day ticket and then an additional ticket for the 10.30pm spectacular. Not sure dd will make it that late - how long did you stay for with dc's?

how much do the campsites tedn to be per night?

DrSpechemin · 01/06/2010 18:18

no idea - we are going with keycamp as don't have enough space to bring a tent. Most campsites have their own websites though which tells you the tarif.

it is a fab site - no bad points at all - would certainly go again

BigTillyMint · 02/06/2010 08:23

Poppy, I'm not exactly sure, but I think it's over £50 a night for a family in your own tent - if you go on the website it has prices up, I think!

Yes, I agree Maddy - it's our second visit to this site!
