Got the camping bed dilemma and heard about fat airics. Are they any good? If so, where is the cheapest place i can buy them from?

I have 2 fat airics for sale and 2 wee airics if anyone wants them. We used them for 2 weeks last year and they are in good condition. We now have a caravan so have no need for them. We live near Northampton of anyone wants to make me an offer.

Am planning to put 2y 2mo toddler on ours! (and Sal's DS is the same age as my DD, so I think she'd say the same)

MisSalLaneous · 24/05/2010 19:46

Yep, as ProfessorLayton says, ds is almost 2y2m and he was fine on it. I can't see how there could be an age restriction on it, to be honest, as it's just a flat mattress. Not a safety feature / action, but we put him on there in his sleeping bag, and then tuck a blanket under the sides of the mat, thereby ensuring he doesn't roll off. Obviously rolling off won't hurt him, but we do it for our his comfort.

Someone is selling 2 brand new - sealed Fat Aitics for £110 + £8 postage on Buy-it-now if interested?

I think I am going to borrow my friends Costco card, as those look good.

seeker · 24/05/2010 22:11

Both of mine slept on camping mats as tiny babies - never crossed my mind that they might not be safe - wnat do you mean, poppyboo?

poppyboo · 25/05/2010 12:39

seeker, i was just curious there was something about self-inflating mats I didn't know about! LOL! just wanted to check it was safe for under threes...i always worry about stuff like that

poppyboo · 25/05/2010 12:42

thanks for the info Milli, I think i'm probably going to go for the new dozer, it looks and sounds good.

good idea Sal, about tucking the blanket round so they don't roll out. My 2yr 2 month old is still in her cot so this should be interesting to try her out of a cot!

MisSalLaneous · 25/05/2010 18:04

Ah, don't worry, ds still in cot too (and does crazy moves in there at night -often I find his head where his feet was the prev evening!). Yet, strangely, he is still in the tent the next morning...

navyeyelasH · 26/05/2010 21:58

Slight hijack here, sorry. I wanted to get some regular far Airics and spent so long researching the difference between thermarests etc and now they have bloody changed the product!

Can anyone tell me what I should buy now? I'm after comfort but also quite small as I may sometime travel on the train. find the Alpkit website confusing, how does hearing about some man with a burned back help me decide what to buy .

MisSalLaneous · 26/05/2010 22:06

Navy, would this comparison on Alpkit help? Maybe I'm just a little thick, but it took me ages to find this!

poppyboo · 27/05/2010 16:07

Navy! just a quicky reply now (i need to do some more replies to all you very nice MN's later)I just wanted to completely agree with you about Alpkit, it is confusing and i think they are trying to be trendy and frankly it's no help at all! and i love the look of the alpkit products but the way it is written is a bit silly...(sorry alpkit)

spikemomma · 31/05/2010 16:51

Ok- so the verdict on the Alpkit dozers is... they are good! I had the best nights sleep i've had camping - compared to an airbed. I was hugely layered up in clothes, but it was comfy (although i sleep on my back rather than my side), and i didn't get a cold back. I love them. Very pleased. I'll use them for sleeping at relatives houses too, they were that good.

Back to report on Wee Airic vs. Little Kippa (which I've taken to calling "Wee Mad Airic" in a Pratchett homage because I can't remember what it's actually called).

It seemed to inflate and deflate faster and hold the air better. We've always been very happy with the Wee Airic but the new model did seem to be an improvement in quality.

It is smaller, though; I think the Wee Airic was 126 x 51.5 x 2.5 cm, and the Little Kippa is 118 x 40 x 2.5 cm. The Airo 120, at 120 x 51 x 2.5 cm, is closer to the Wee Airic dimensions (although still shorter). So I probably wouldn't buy a Little Kippa for use by anyone over six or so.

On a side note, I don't seem to see a model in the current range that replaces the old regular Airic. The regular Airic was 180 x 64 x 4 cm (versus the Slim Airic's 180 x 51.5 x 3 cm and the Fat Airic's 202 x 62 x 7.3 cm), but in order to get a width over 51 cm now you need to go for the Dozer, as far as I can see. This is annoying as I am just coming to the conclusion that the Slim Airic is just too narrow for me and I could do with a 60 cm plus width, but I don't really want to add the bulk of a Dozer to my packing. I may have to look for a second-hand regular Airic or hold on and see if a better range of width options comes in in 2011.

[All sizes result of my Googling, rather than having an encyclopedic memory or crawling around with a tape measure, so I may have got some of the old sizes wrong]

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 01/06/2010 20:28

(or I see the Wedge is 69 cm wide, which would be fine if I wanted a wedge shape, which I don't)

(Oh, the Little Kippa red is also a slightly different shade from the old Airic red, so our mats no longer match beautifully. Sniff.)

poppyboo · 05/06/2010 14:14

hello everyone again! I wanted to pop back in and say I have finally made up my mind about the camping self inflating mat I want....I've decided to go for a therm-a-rest afterall...I'm getting a Therm-a-rest Prolite plus Womens Regular mat for £90. It's thickness is 3.8 cm but when I lay on it it was super comfy and it's designed for a woman in mind (the different areas females get cold in comparison to men)and the packsize was amazing, so small!!! That is very important to us b/c even though we are car camping we hope to get a Bear Lake 6 tent which is huge so eveything else has to be supersmall!!! LOL!!!! We checked them out in Coleman's and the customer service was great in there and the young lady who was talking told me that she actually owns the mat i am buying and couldn't say enough good stuff about it. So I am getting that one, my hubby is getting the Therm-a-rest Trail Lite for £55 and for my two liitle ones I think we will go with Little Kippa...but I have a 5 year old who is tall so after what Professor said I'm not sure for her.....
Anyway I just wanted to let you know!

Surprise · 23/08/2010 18:56

Well we use the "pump 'em up yourself" canvas lilos from Argos. £14.99 for a single. They've been fantastic and really comfy. I'm sure the other type are great, but if you're looking for a cheaper option, then you could do a lot worse.
