Glastonbury festival- anyone else ? Want to get excited with me?

Hello! It's 6 weeks till Glastonbury and I'm starting to get a bit giddy with excitement! I've been umpteen times but this year is a bit different as it'll be my first year in family camping as I'm taking my 1 year old with me! And my new bell tent. The wee boy has already joined us at a few festivals last summer and I can't wait to share my favourite one with him!

I feel like a bit of a Glastonbury virgin though as I've never been to Glastonbury without copious drinking etc and all night revellery, so it feels like I'm going to a different festival! I'm excited about the kids field, about seeing more of the day, about a slower pace. But I'm also curious as to where to camp? Anyone ever been with kids? Camped in cockmill meadow? What's it like? Any tips?

Anyone else want to share excitement? And possibly a cider?

Hi. Yes! I'm going too. Very excited too. Surprised there are not more mumsnet ladies going. Perhaps we're a bit mad.
It's my sixth Glasto- fourth as a mummy-but first time with a baby! (I have a 13 year old and a 9 month old.) The last couple of times we camped in Cockmill Meadow behind the Kids Field. It's perfectly placed but does get full very quickly. I think I bagged the last tent-sized space of ground last year on the wednesday. There are other, less crowded camping areas, but a bit furthur out from the throng I believe, but haven't tried them myself.
The Glastonbury website has some good info on taking children, although You seem to know what you're letting yourself in for as you've been before and done other festivals with your little one. I'm just trying to prepare for all eventualities- rain, mud, hot sun. Also, we were stuck in our car for hours trying to get in last year, so planning for that would be a good idea too, just in case.
How are you planning to transport your little one around the site? How did you manage with a baby at festivals last year?

See you in the Kids field and NCT tent then ;)

LOU x

I will be watching from my sofa, with a fridge and bathroom, oh and a comfy bed, just a few steps away .

I'll go when mine are school age.

Have fun!

i'm going but not taking ds as it's our one festival of the summer just for 'us'.

lou - the traffic last year was really bad. We were lucky and only queued an hour (at about 8am) but there had been a bad accident on the motorway at the slip road for the festy and it caused a huge backlog of problems.
We were caught out getting off on the monday and hadn't prepared for being stuck in the car park, so will make sure we have water/food/supplies in case it happens this year.

I did take ds once when he was 22 months, in 2007 which was really muddy. He loved it! we camped in Cockmill Meadow, and it does fill up quite quickly on the Weds.

This site is great for info and i still look at it every year to build the excitement. The FAQ section is written by a good festy friend of mine.

tips?
lights for the pushchair (assume you're taking one) as they aren't so visible if you want to be out after dark and it can avoid people stumbling over the wheels. We also thread glow sticks through the front wheel at night to help it stand out. (you've done other festies though so you might have this one figured out)
the Greenfields can be a haven when you have smalls with you, as it doesn't get quite so busy up there and they have lots of child friendly activites on as well as the stuff provided in the Kids Field.

should we attempt a mumsnet meet?

frekkles · 23/05/2010 20:50

Hey hey! hello lasses! That's ace to get a response, I was starting to think I was the only one!

Nice to hear from you lou. Last summer was fine, I found it much easier being a mum outdoors in the sunshine with all my friends around me than I do at home sometimes! A few wobbles when he got poorly ( just a cold) and my new mum paranoia went into overdrive, but calpol worked a treat and we were back in business. Wonder if you can buy it up the stone circle.

We've got a phil and ted's sport as a buggy, a wrap and my boyfriend has one of those baby rucksack things. So hopefully that'll all work out. Trying to figure out some kind of rainwear for the wee boy when he's in the wrap and rucksack. And also trying to figure out a high chair substitute. Got a wee table attachment for the pram, but not sure about otherwise. We have blw'ed our son and he's an enthusiastic and messy eater! We were camping at the beach this weekend
and picnicking on the ground doesn't work, too much sand mud and whatever getting eaten too! Any ideas
ladies?

Good call about gettingstuck in the car. We're planning on leaving teatime on Tuesday, driving down from Scotland and getting into carpark 2 am ish, so to be one of the firsts in. Hopefully we'll get a good space.

I know tort queen rollo! He's a good friend of mine! What a coincedence! How do you know him?

You've also just got me on a battery powered fairy lights spending spree! Mumsnet meet? Aye!

It's our first festival of the year next weekend., so we'll be having a dry run!

I camped with Tort last year (tent neighbours in Williams) and saw him at the festival we went to last weekend!
Well how about that for a coincidence! How do you know him?
I met him through mutual friends, a big group of us from all over meet at festivals and camp together.

we'll have to swap details nearer the time and arrange to meet.

frekkles · 26/05/2010 00:11

ooooh, can I get excited about Jersey Live where Paul Weller is headlining? And Jersey Grassroots where the Fun Loving Criminals are playing? Just a shame that we will have to take the kids.........

queenrollo · 26/05/2010 20:49

frekkles - i had to look that up. not there....met through a different website which a whole load of us were subsequently banned from for some stupid reason.

navyeyelasH · 26/05/2010 21:50

Finally a Glasto thread, I've been mooning around umming and ahhing what to take for weeks now!

Am childless so going with friends and it's my first time!

queenrollo · 27/05/2010 14:21

hello navy......first timer?

here's a newbie challenge. Wherever you are pitched, walk up to the stone circle/sacred space and DO NOT turn around until you reach it. Then take in the view that greets you. I'm on my 8th year and i still do that.....

Getting very excited now. Have part of my fancy dress outfit here just need to get the sewing machine out and adjust it.

We're having a 4 day pre glasto camping holdiay too.....so need to pack very carefully this year.

Who are you guys excited about musically? it's a bit barren for me this year but Danny and the Champions of the World, Frank Turner, New Model Army and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly are looking to be my must sees.

queenrollo · 13/06/2010 20:18

anyone still around?

AnathemaDevice · 13/06/2010 21:23

I'm going too! Taking my 14 month old, I'm hoping he'll love it there as much as I do. We've got a wagon and a backpack for lugging him around site, and an all in one waterproof, which obviously won't be used, as it'll be brilliant sunshine all weekend

I'm getting worried about getting into family camping now- we should arrive at about midday on Wednesday, do you reckon there will still be space?

I've been studying the clashfinder, but I still haven't decided who I'm going to see- I think I'll probably do my usual thing of just wandering about and listening to whatever sounds interesting.

I second walking up to the top of the stone circle field and looking down over the temporary city that'll be your home for the next few days. There's no other sight quite like it...

DuelingFanjo · 15/06/2010 20:59

I am going can't wait. I am arriving on Wednesday but a bit worried that many people will already be in and on site by the time I get there because they are letting people stay in the car-parks on the Tuesday night. Not looking forward to the queue!

Am very excited though. Plannign on camping in the park bit instead of Pennards this year which will be a bit different, I like being near the stone circle. I am going to be about 16 weeks pregnant so talking it easy. No cider for me

NappyShedSal · 18/06/2010 16:16

We didn't get tickets this year - actually I think my children are more gutted than we are - they're 8 and 5 and have been going for the last 4 years.

So going to WOMAD instead - looking forwrad to it but wish it was Glasto! Please go and have fun in the Kidz Field and teh circus field on our behalf - and especially make sure you stroke the yak. Oh dear I'm getting even sadder now!

IslasMummy27 · 19/06/2010 23:05
