Campervans?

Family want to camp but I don't like it! Sooooooo thinking of hiring a 4 or 6 berth camper van just for a weekend to try it out?

Any advice? They seem massive but have driven a transit so know I would get used to it. The idea is I sleep in the van and everyone else camps!

Give it a go, you never know you might like it!

Where abouts are you, I can recommend a camper van hire place

North West. Are they hard to drive?

Thanks for reply btw.

Dh advises driving very similar to Transit van - you need to be careful round corners and they really do catch the wind.

I haven't been trusted to drive it due to having an Unfortunate Moment behind the wheel once.

If you hire an old VW they take a bit of getting used to. I struggled with mine when I first got it but am fine with it now. DH hardly ever drives it and when he does he stalls it loads and puts it in reverse instead of first. Makes it interesting pulling out of junctions.

Mine maybe slightly worse than others though, not sure have only driven mine.

If you can drive a Transit you'll be used to the size and thats the main thing. With VWs the wheels are set differently to a Transit and in a VW you need to go a bit further out/straight on at junctions before starting to turn otherwise you hit the kerb. Mainly left turns I found that out on. Was forever hitting the kerb when I first got it.

They're loads of fun, expensive to hire though.

Oh dear - getting a bit scared now! I fancied going to the Lakes in one but can't see me driving it around all those little lanes!

I might do a trial run over a weekend. Thanks for your advice everyone.

Sorry the company I know is in SE London - still give it a go anyway!

MisSalLaneous · 18/05/2010 23:35

Sorry to interrupt, but needanewname, do you mind naming that company in SE London? We consider hiring one for a long weekend later in the year when my inlaws visit, so we can camp whilst they sleep inside.

Needanewname · 18/05/2010 23:38

OK as long as I'm not going against Mumsnet rules I don;t want to get them into trouble!!!

Or you could contact me via MN?

Will check on here tomorrow am off to bed now - if I can ever get off of here!

MisSalLaneous · 18/05/2010 23:46
