Can anyone suggest a good family tent?

Hello,

We are taking out fifteen month old camping in June and I am looking to buy a new tent with a bit more space, which we'll no doubt be using for years to come.

Can anyone reccommend a good model of tent (that's easy to put up!) with space for a couple of children and their paraphanalia? I was hoping to spend less than £150.

I am not a very seasoned camper and feel baffled by the variations available!

Thanks

hi for about that money this is a good one....very straightforward to put up and good specification (sewn in groundsheet/HH 3000)

www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/products/tents/5-6-man-tents/outwell-virginia-5-tent.aspx

a couple of downsides are the windows at mainly at the sides and you can't buy a purpose made extension....

but the main upside against competitors at this price is the design of the front door going over the lip'(not sure how to describe that) rather than to the ground which is much more draught/water proof....

another that gets good recommendations is...

We were going for the Outwell Montana 6 as we no sooooo many people who rave about it.We did masses of research and loved it, it has a little porch thing you could use for 'stuff' or a loo and you can get an awning or extension.Good size for pitching with masses of space inside. Sadly we couldn't fit our 3 dc in the 2nd bedroom so have gone for the Outwell Vermont XL.

Definitely go to a Yeomans thingy as they had all the Outwells up.Check on line prices before you go as the guy was flexible with price. He was going to give us a free footprint just because I asked . He was very helpful.

Sorry Yeomans do tent fair things, there is a list of venues on their website all over so there should be one near you, well worth going as you can really see what you're buying.

Excellent

Love the OUtwell Virginia- lookes big and high enough and with a good outside space.

I'll check out the Montana too though.

I'd not heard of outwell before, presumedly a US make. Looks like they are the last word in family tents!

I think you might find the Virginia too small over time.

The beauty of the Montana is the little side thing you can cook in and the possibility of adding an extension, the Virginia hasn't got the side thing and it doesn't look as if you can get an awning to add on. Also the Montana has a lovely inside space (good for indoor times) really stands out when you walk round them all.

However the Virginia is a good price, you could get that to see if you like camping then upgrade in a couple of years time.

Hmmm choices, choices, thought it was bad when you had 3 kids, you've got even more options.

Think Outwell are Danish ???.There are plenty of other makes but I think Outwell are quite sturdy. The Yeomans guy really rated them,he owned the Troutlake(canvas and too small for us) which looked lovely. We fell in love with the Bear Lake(canvas and still too small for us) too but they are heavier and more work drying out, he said they'd last longer. We went for lighter, cheaper, space and ease of drying in the end.

Actually dp and dd really wanted the Indian Lake too.

Be warned tent buying is strangely seductive, never thought I'd find myself in raptures over storage pockets .

We have this one
served us very well on a holiday in france last summer. 2 weeks in all weathers. relatively easy to pitch (dh could do it on his own), decent size bedrooms, great hight.

sorry, it*s this one, the xl version

hi, just taken the virginia away for the weekend and its a good design v simple and as the 3 poles are the same length good height for most of it dh 6'2 was fine....Montanas are great but a lot dearer and heavier, this I could put up on my own...the bed pods are not huge and I woudl suggest a four man not 5 ... we got 1 double airbed for ds and 2 thermarests in easily but nothing else would fit.... seemed well made but no rain to check for leaks..

Mila Mae probably right that likely to outgrow in a few years depending on the sort of camping you do and how many kids you have.... we will use this for weekends as have a bear lake for longer trips but have been through 5/6 tents over a few years to get to this combination!
