Hi we're doing a big trip to the States and would love to check out their version of "Cool Campsites". Still planning the trip, but the above destinations are likely to be the States we visit.....can't seem to find much by googling, need pointing in the right direction!

I've stayed in a cabin in Glacier National Park - it is one of the lesser-known parks so quieter than somewhere like Yosemite. Think I booked the cabin directly with the park service (and this was pre-Internet) so probably easier to do now.

Have used my own tent in Yosemite, but think you can rent cabins there too.

Are you going this year? If so you will need to book soon as the campsites get booked up early, so many Americans holiday at home.

We considered staying here www.treebonesresort.com/. I thought it looked great. Lovely yurts and an outdoor hottub. However, we didn't actually make it in the end so I can't give a personal recommendation.

I stayed here www.breitenbush.com/ as a kid. It's very lentil weavery but stunning. Log cabins in a forest with lots of natural hot springs to bathe in and amazing walks all around. However, the lentil weaver factor was major, all the food was vegan and many bathers were naked (this was 15 years ago so it may have changed).

It's difficult to advise locations as you don't have a route yet and as I am sure you know the states are HUGE! Also I am not familiar with 'Cool Camping' and I can't remember the places we stayed by name but can offer a few websites for you. We tent camped so limited personal advice on what you're looking for...

The US does leisure stuff really well and govt run sites are pretty roomy and I can't remember a duff one that we went to.

We did stay in 'the floating cabins' at Ross Lake Resort with friends of ours and had a blast. Highway 20 is a beautiful drive too. BUT if you have small children beware - you are surrounded by water and many of the kids in our party fell in. Ours had to wear life jackets at all time when outside the cabin, just in case.

I was thoroughly impressed with their National Park Service. It is great for visiting our National Trust type (historic) homes but they are also the people who look after the huge parks like Yellowstone. (To find accommodation select your State and park then use 'Plan your visit', then 'Things to do', 'Places to go' and 'Campgrounds' - a bit labourious but it's there)

Also check out the State Parks Washington State Parks, Oregon State Parks etc for the other states for their yurts and cabins.

For up to date helpful personal info try the Fodors and Tripadvisor forums. Other people are asking similar questions to you.

New England was fab but I just loved the West Coast. You'll have a ball whatever you decide on.

Shout if you need more help.

Thank you everyone for advice (including bear warning )....In CA we'll stick close to San Fran, down as far as Monterey probably and up to Napa-ish. Oregan we are around Portland though are thinking maybe we should drive SF to Portland rather than fly, what do you lot think? Train was REALLY expensive with a sleeper car; flights expensive and car hire also seems expensive but prob the cheapest option. Mapquest says it's 9 hrs drive.
Can anyone recommend the cheapest car hire place? And can you pick up one place and drop another (SF and Portland)?
New England we have no set route yet, apart from visiting the Big Apple (NOT camping )

Watching thread with interest!

We want to drive from San Francisco to Washington in my cousins RV next year.

Nooodle · 19/04/2010 22:45

Just a quickie as I should be doing something else but just popped in...

The drive north on the Oregon Coast (Route 101) is stunning - don't fly if you can help it. One way hire is possible but can be $$$$ though. 9hrs is probably I5 time so 101 will be slower. We took a week (I think)to drive from Puget Sound to SF. Will try to remember where we stopped.

Will drop in again but I assume you know Monterey has famous (not been but supposed to be 'Awesome')aquarium and Mt St Helens is not far from Portland?

Feeling envious!

peasoup · 21/04/2010 09:27

Thanks everyone.
I will be going to the aquarium Monterey definately. Any other stuff near San Fran? I'm thinking camping cabins in Big Sur..
Day trips form Portland as looks like we will fly up there

Not campsites but visit I really want to do myself from Portland:

oregonhotsprings.immunenet.com/bagby.htm

These hot springs were in the film Old Joy, others on the website do have camping attached. My father from Oregon, sister in San Fran and really want to get back there soon - just love the west coast.
