Help me light my lovely Cobb!

I dusted my wonderful Cobb off today and tried to get it going with a cobblestone. I couldn't light the cobblestone with a cigarette lighter or longish matches. I spent half an hour trying and then ended by making a mini bonfire of the half used matches on top of the cobblestone. A valiant attempt but to no avail! I don't remember having trouble last year. Any suggestions for efficient cobblestone lighting?

Oh dear, maybe the flammable products within have evaporated or something.

You are using a cobb stone and not a cobblestone aren't you?

I never found lighting the cobb stones that easy tbh. We have one of those long candle lighter thingumies (you click the switch and a little flame comes out the end). I'd pick the cobb stone up and hold it directly above the flame...and wait..and wait...and wait and then it suddenly gets going and I'd drop it in the cobb.

You might have to douse the stones with some lighter fluid to perk them up a bit.

Thanks Slubber. I'm glad you've found them a bit tricky too! The idea of holding them above the flame and chucking them in is great. I thought about using a bit of a fire lighter on it which might do the job too. I was wondering about getting one of the lighter thingies you mention. I've given up tonight but will try again later in the week for minty lamb burgers! Can't wait for very, very tasty Cobb Summer! (Probably won't be going for the Kelly Kettle with my fire lighting history...)

Thanks so much Slubber, glad it's not just me! Thought I might try a bit of a firelighter or something. I probably should get a better lighting device and I will most certainly develop asbestos fingers for throwing it back in after lighting! Really looking forward to a tasty Cobb Summer. Following my rubbish lighting skills I don't think I should bother with the kelly kettle any time soon...

Oh dear, posted similar message twice. I thought it hadn't worked! Obviously it's not my day. Too much technology.

my cadac lit v. easily slubber.....

fireandlife · 13/04/2010 21:20

I think the problem was to do with the fuel I was using rather than the device! The Cobb is marvellous, honestly!

was your cobblestone old? mine light with the touch of a match.

Clarissimo · 14/04/2010 16:01

I did as DH lighting the cobblestone is a thing oif glory and comedy LOL

DH puts some paper or similar and gets that going before placing cobblestone on top; make sure it is a full flmae before replacing. Sometimes the lifghter fluid in some is a bit low and it can take a while.

Of course our old cadac - a - like grill ligyts easy as anything but heck nowt ebats roast beef, spud, veg and yorkies cooked in a cobb by the sea in Pembrokeshire IMO

Yes, the stone was old, well, last year's. I'll try again tomorrow having soaked up all your sage advice.

Our gas barbecue lights well too but the Cobb makes such lovely things and is so portable.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

I don't know anything about cobbs... but would like to know your minty lamburger recipe, fireandlife . My dh would love them!!

fireandlife · 17/04/2010 12:39

OK! Here's the world's easiest minty lamb burger recipe.
You need lamb mince, a good handful of chopped, fresh mint and some cracked black pepper.

Roughly chop the mint until it's smallish, use your hands to mix it with the mince and then squash into burger shapes. Sprinkle a decent amount of roughly ground black pepper on each side, you might need to press it in a bit. Then cook! If you haven't got fresh mint to hand, dried is fine. A perfect camping recipe. Great thing is, all DPs should be able to do this themselves!

Enjoy1
